poor relief pitcher choice bump

Great game by Kershaw. Got out of the 4th inning that had the tying run on third with nobody out. If he was a choker, that would have been it.

You can fault him for walking Margot to start the inning, but not his fault that the catcher threw the ball away on a steal attempt to put him on third. Got two outs, then attempted steal of home. Again, if he was a choker that's where it would happen. When the runner behind your back takes off like that you have an instant to make the right play. Easy to screw up by making a bad throw, or committing a balk. Kershaw handled it perfectly.

Happy with the result last night but Lets Go Rays! for Tuesday. I want to see game 7.

On bases-empty strikeouts, the catcher was throwing it back to Kershaw and not around the horn. Is that a Dodger thing or a Kershaw thing? I forgot to pay attention when it happened later in the game.

I can't believe there was a caught-stealing when Glasnow was extremely wild and his rising pitch count was going to be a major problem for the Rays.
   604. Rally Posted: October 26, 2020 at 11:18 AM (#5985451)
Fair enough to wonder why you'd try to steal a base with your catcher (though Barnes runs well for one and is 15 for 19 in career steal attempts). And it does look especially bad when the batter at the plate ends up walking. But I don't think Glasnow's pitch count should have anything to do with it. It's not like if you get him out of the game you get to hit against a scrub reliever who tops out at 90 MPH, like it's a 1990s regular season game. Once Glasnow leaves, they bring in another pitcher throwing 100, so don't worry about your opponents' pitch count and do whatever you can to maximize your scoring chances against him.

I think it's a Covid thing? I thought that was one of the things MLB said not to do since it increases the number of people touching the ball. Most teams probably ignored it.

There was a lot of talk about avoiding a balk, but since he's throwing home, what's to stop him from just delivering a pitch?

Another thought: what happens if he does step off, and so doesn't deliver a pitch, but the batter swings and hits it anyway?
   607. KronicFatigue Posted: October 26, 2020 at 02:18 PM (#5985502)
A "real pitch" could work with a lefty, with the pitch winding up outside and down the third base line. But the catcher still has to wait a bit to give the hitter an opportunity to swing.

Nothing. It just would have taken him longer than stepping off and firing.

And Kronic's correct about the catcher as well.

I didn't see the game, so I've only seen the attempt on replay. I'm guessing there's a camera angle where he's clearly out, but I sure as hell haven't seen it yet.

Relevant parts of relevant rules:
6.01(a) It is interference by a batter or a runner when he intentionally interferes with a thrown ball. PENALTY FOR INTERFERENCE: The runner is out and the ball is dead. If the umpire declares the batter, batter-runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules.

6.01(b) If a member of the team at bat (other than a runner) hinders a fielder’s attempt to field a thrown ball, the ball is dead, the runner on whom the play is being made shall be declared out and all runners return to the last legally occupied base at the time of the interference.

6.01(c) The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when the catcher or any fielder interferes with him. If a play follows the interference, the manager of the offense may advise the plate umpire that he elects to decline the interference penalty and accept the play. Such election shall be made immediately at the end of the play. However, if the batter reaches first base on a hit, an error, a base on balls, a hit batsman, or otherwise, and all other runners advance at least one base, the play proceeds without reference to the interference.

6.01(g) If, with a runner on third base and trying to score by means of a squeeze play or a steal, the catcher or any other fielder steps on, or in front of home base without possession of the ball, or touches the batter or his bat, the pitcher shall be charged with a balk, the batter shall be awarded first base on the interference and the ball is dead.

6.03(a)(3) A batter is out for illegal action when he interferes with the catcher’s fielding or throwing by stepping out of the batter’s box or making any other movement that hinders the catcher’s play at home base. EXCEPTION: Batter is not out if any runner attempting to advance is put out, or if runner trying to score is called out for batter’s interference.

So on the notion of him just delivering a pitch, he would avoid the balk if he correctly delivered a pitch. But then the catcher would need to stay back in the catcher's box until he catches the pitch (assuming it's not put in play), and then lunge forward to make the tag. Otherwise he risks catcher interference. Per 6.01(c) if the catcher interferes with the batter the Rays would get to decide whether to take the interference based on the outcome of the steal of home. If Margot is safe, they decline the interference; if he's out, they accept the interference, Margo returns safely to 3rd, and the batter advances to 1st. If the batter doesn't swing, but the catcher moves on or in front of home plate before he has the ball, it's a balk (runners advance) AND interference, per 6.01(g).

If he DOESN'T deliver the pitch, then the catcher is free to move up to (but not on or past) the plate to receive the throw, and the batter must not interfere else the runner will be declared out.

So, basically, if he delivers a pitch the batter can swing, and the catcher must hang back to avoid interference, both of which are better for the batting team than if the pitcher steps off and throws.

I wonder what the Dodgers pitching usage will look like today and how conservative Dave Roberts plays it with the series lead.

It's pretty straightforward for the Rays - You hope Snell gives you 4 or 5 innings, and then you have Fairbanks, Castillo, Anderson and Loup if the right situation vs a lefty arises.

For the Dodgers, I can imagine them going with Gonsolin a little longer than they have been. They have May, Kelly, Treinen, Jansen, Gonzalez, etc but do they really want to throw all of them, especially if they're down? It's a tough call if Gonsolin throws something like 2 innings of 2 run ball.

Looking forward to tonight's game!

Is the thinking that Urias is unavailable today? He pitched 4+ innings on Saturday. If they are holding both Buehler and Urias for Game 7, that is reasonable, but obviously closing out the Series in 6 would be preferable.
   612. daveywein Posted: October 27, 2020 at 03:08 PM (#5985713)
Forgot about Urias! Someone else who could throw an inning or 2
   613. Dr. Vaux Posted: October 27, 2020 at 08:13 PM (#5985780)
Given the narrative, the Rays are as big of a lock as there is.

Arozarena has nine HR in this postseason now. He might double that over next two games.

It's like you expect Arozarena to homer in each game. When he doesn't do something, I find myself a bit disappointed.

It will feel like a letdown if Arozarena doesn’t hit a grand slam in this AB with two runners on base.
   624. puck Posted: October 27, 2020 at 08:53 PM (#5985793)
Those were 3 pretty good pitches.
   625. Howie Menckel Posted: October 27, 2020 at 09:01 PM (#5985795)
Dodgers will be up a run in the 9th, but Arozarena bats third in the inning.

the only way to disable Arozarena's super powers leads to Roberts having the Dodgers walk the first two batters.

Arozarena, rendered almost impotent by baserunners, gamely hits a hard grounder to the third base bag that results in a triple play.

still not sure that scenario tops the finish the other night - but at least it's in the discussion.

:)
   626. Itchy Row Posted: October 27, 2020 at 09:03 PM (#5985796)
The six Dodger hitters have hit the ball a combined 20 feet tonight.

Another marketing opportunity: install revolving glass door between the bullpen and field of play.
Well, it could actually be behind the wall, so that the wall is still a padded smooth wall for the outfielder, but each of the relievers has to twirl through it before they hit the field.
(Who actually still has a bullpen down the line, not behind a wall? Oakland?)
This second inning pitching change brought to you by STANLEY. For the best doors and windows in the business, or your home, STANLEY is the name to remember.

I don’t think Arozarena is a flash in the pan. He’s just flicking his bat at the ball and hitting opposite field homers

   633. bunyon Posted: October 27, 2020 at 09:23 PM (#5985804)
I got what Smoltz was saying. Over a lot of games, the shift pays off. If a single beats you, the shift turns a routine ground ball into a loss.

Of course, it takes a batter that can and will go with a pitch against the shift. Not sure he's right that there are 5 guys in the series that would/could.

Smoltz of course did not comment that the line drive to Wendle being an easy out was because of the shift. It’s may have still been an out non-shift but it was an easy play with shift

I was going to say \"#### THE RAYS AND THE HORSE THEY RODE IN ON" - but yours works, too.

to be fair, the top 3 Dodgers hitters looked scary while going 0 for 6 with 6 Ks - nah, I'm just kidding.

now - GO DODGERS

I couldn't believe Verducci's comment, so I doublechecked.

yes, Mookie Betts' .218 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) SLG against LHP (like Snell) this season was the worst in MLB (10 singles and one double in 55 AB). and Nick Anderson has allowed a run or more in 6 consecutive appearances.

methinks the Dodgers hacked into the Rays' algorithm.

The irony is that the Dodgers still did their damage the third time through the order.

lol!

I think Snell had K’d Beets, Seager and Turner twice each.

Edit: he had. Dude had 9 k’s, can’t believe they pulled him

I guess it shouldn't be overlooked how the Rays really squandered some good chances to pad their lead a bit in the first two innings.

I believe the Seager and Bellinger both have big platoon splits while Muncy has none, so obviously this is the time to bring in the lefty.

I can understand pulling Snell if his pitch count was high. But it was only 73!

I was still fixated on this idea of Snell striking out Mookie 3 times. I would guess that Mookie has more 3 homer games then getting K'd by the same pitcher 3 times in the same game.

I'm sure the numbers say not to let your pitcher see a third time through the batting order.

the numbers say pitchers have less success in their third time through. but its not like the magical "third time through" equals success. if your pitcher is still throwing good pitches, there is no reason to expect him to suffer.

Leo Mazzone and other good coaches could tell you.

Maybe Snell injured himself during that jump up and down thang after his failed curveball in the third...

The FBI is investigating...

The wheels fell off for Snell quickly in Game 2, so I understand being a little quick to react and pull him. The real issue is they went to Nick Anderson, who's pitched like ass this postseason.
