I was wondering what would happen if there was a game seven and somebody tested positive tomorrow after he’d been around everybody on both teams for the last week.

Could have been a complete shitshow

I guess so, there he is.

Friedman's new team beats his old team. Must be kind of weird, right?

Friedman's thanks start with the scouts, then to the training staff.

Joc Pederson is not a Dodger next year, is he?

Baseball is funny. If someone had told me that Justin Turner would be batting third for a World Series winning team in 2020, I would have thought you were crazy. He's been really good as a Dodger.
   811. Snowboy Posted: October 27, 2020 at 11:59 PM (#5985990)
Rays "snelled" themselves right out of it.
Not that the Dodgers hadn't also tried to "urias" themselves the same way, earlier in the series.

As I said [712] this is a boardroom win. And a boardroom loss. You can have Paul's laptop decide many things the day before a game, but when the infield is wet, or umpire's zone is expanding, or pitcher has not allowed a hard hit ball, you have to loosen the reins and let the dugout manage.

It's sad that I love baseball, and that I also love statistics, and this series has ended with me talking about both. This Dodgers teams is fantastic, one for the ages. I'm glad I'm not talking about umps like other years, they were barely noticeable this year, that's good. But we ended up questioning manager's moves at a far higher rate than normal, because they made moves at a high rate than normal. And not exactly to winning effect.

Their first WS championship without Vin Scully as their announcer.

Before we get to analytical (as we do, me included if only mentally, by reading the great posts here)
let me quote the above. Dodgers were a great team this year.

813. Indeed; at least he lived to see it.

Wonder what would have happened if this went 7 w/Turner's test?

Also, Manfred sounds like Lawrence Welk.

Also, diplomatic response by Seager's feeling regarding the new ride; that's what she wants (said?).

He could have said I drive a Bentley, not a Chevy.

Now the local show is trying to get Steve Garvey and Mary Hart to admit they know each other. It’s come to this.

33 years between 1 and 6, 32 years between 6 and 7. Doesn't feel quite right.

When Vin called their first one, I was a long way from existing, my parents were little kids. For the 6th one I was almost an adult, senior in HS.

No. The numbers say that the pitchers generally do worse the third time through the order.

The real issue is whether Anderson's regular season numbers represent his actual talent level. It's a move that sense if Anderson is a 1.35 FIP pitcher. But I don't think anybody believes he is. And you'll need other pitchers in any case, so it's not just whether Anderson can give you a few outs. Of course the Rays bullpen had plenty of other guys who'd been lights out all year.

And it's whether Snell could sustain what he'd been doing all night.

   830. Howie Menckel Posted: October 28, 2020 at 09:37 AM (#5986054)
Anderson had allowed at least one run in an all-time record six consecutive postseason appearances - now make it seven.

how many did the Rays need to take THAT into account - 100?

Game 7s usually are great. but in this case, I'm glad the Rays were sent packing last night.

good riddance.
   831. villageidiom Posted: October 28, 2020 at 10:25 AM (#5986064)
No. The numbers say that the pitchers generally do worse the third time through the order.
The numbers say that shifting generally works. But we all know there are times when the general approach will produce disaster if followed.

Like, let's say the Rays came back and won it last night. Snell has generally been unavailable without at least 4 days' rest this season. Generally speaking, teams would rather have a position player pitch in a long extra-inning game than to have one of their starters enter the game in relief. By the notion of what *generally* works, Mike Brosseau would have been available before Snell, should Game 7 go into extra innings and they're running short of pitchers. And that would have been absurd, because what generally makes sense isn't necessarily the right call when the season is on the line.

That's not to say taking Snell out, or bringing Anderson in, was the wrong call. I don't have the information Kevin Cash had on their relative health and performance. The information I have suggests it was boneheaded, but maybe I don't have all the information.

I will say this: given the slavish approach to what generally worked, a called strike three was an apt ending to their season.
   832. Ron J Posted: October 28, 2020 at 10:54 AM (#5986076)
#831 Apparently the decision was made before the game that Snell wasn't going to go through the order 3 times. That's the kind of thing that happens all of the time in baseball. General observations are turned into hard and fast rules.

Also, as Rally noted in another thread the decsion didn't take into account that Anderson has been worked far harder in the playoffs than he was at any point in the season. So we weren't comparing tired Snell to rested Anderson.

Also, I checked Snell. He doesn't face batters 3 times in a game all that often. But has been only slightly worse than the second time through. Which makes sense. He only gets to go that far when he's been effective.

His pattern is interesting (using career numbers):

First time facing a batter as SP: .205/.280/.312
Second: .234/.316/.396
Third: .247/.329/.413
He's only had 8 PAs in his career when he's faced a batter 4+ times. 0-7, 1BB, 2 Ks

All in all, I can see a short leash.

EDIT: But probably not that short. Because he'd been so effective his pitch count was low.
   833. bunyon Posted: October 28, 2020 at 11:18 AM (#5986086)
That looks to me like the third time through isn't as big a drop as the second time through. He should be a reliever, I guess.

(Just saw your edit. Yes, I agree. I also know they've had him on a very short leash after the injury, which is very smart, I think. I also think when he's cruising in Game 6, you open it up a little)
