World Series Urgency Index ‘21: Who MUST win?

(W)e put together the Playoff Urgency Index. When you factor in things like past postseason pains, pending free agents, payroll obligations and prospect potency, we can sort the remaining clubs on a relative scale—10 being the most urgent, 1 being the most relaxed.

Note: We are including all teams still mathematically alive for the postseason, which is 12 in total at the moment, even though only 10 will ultimately qualify for the playoffs.

4. White Sox
Urgency Index: 8, or how old Luis Robert was the last time the Sox won it all

While the AL Central champion White Sox do have a lot of young talent on their roster, they also rely greatly on a 34-year-old Lance Lynn and José Abreu and a 32-year-old Yasmani Grandal. The Sox’s farm system is ranked last in the game by MLB Pipeline, and they haven’t won a playoff series since the 2005 championship run. Heck, their manager is 77 years old, so you can bet he’s feeling some urgency.

Honestly I don’t really agree with a lot of the choices but it’s a fun concept.

TL;DR, but it seems to me the best measure of this would be from a fan's perspective, assigning urgency points for:
Never won WS
Never been to WS
Length of playoff drought (longer, the more points)
Last time won WS (the longer, the more urgency points)
Last time been to WS (ditto)
Number of times won WS/been to WS in last 10 years (the fewer, the more points)
Number of WS won in franchise history (the fewer the more urgency)
Number of WS appearances in franchise history (ditto)

Then you can grid the AL and NL on separate axes in order of urgency points to find the most and least urgent WS matchups and make a little heat map. Without actually doing this work, I'd say the best WS matchup among the remaining contenders would probably SEA vs MIL and the worst NYY vs STL or LAD.

Go M's!

I think that combining fan's perspective, owner perspective and player perspective is the way you want to do an urgency index, as the article pointed out anything that happens this year for the Blue Jays is just gravy, they have a fantastic core of very young under control talent.

There is no need for quantification this year. The most urgent World Series is Milwaukee vs Seattle. Everyone else has won and most fairly recently.

Given the possibility the Rays are not long for Tampa, particularly if that cockamamie dual-city plan goes through, winning a title before hightailing out of the city should be a factor in the urgency index.

Sure. They’re ahead of, say, the yanks or Red Sox. But Seattle has never won a pennant and the rays won last year. The brewers have only won once and unless your 45, you don’t remember it.

Not to mention, the Brewers and Mariners have fans. Gotta have fans for urgency.
