Yahoo: Braves LF Matt Diaz helps tackle fan in Philly

Atlanta left fielder Matt Diaz has helped tackle a costumed fan who ran onto the field and briefly eluded security guards during the Braves-Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park, where a teenager was subdued with a stun gun this season.

The fan, wearing a red spandex suit with a red mask Monday night, jogged onto the field in the bottom of the seventh inning. He was chased by security guards for several seconds. After a guard slipped for the second time, Diaz coolly banged his knee into the back of the fan’s knee, knocking him down. The guards then apprehended the fan.

Diaz got an ovation from the crowd and received high-fives from teammates in the dugout.

Take notes, kids, this is how you get the Phans on your side.

Diaz clearly went out there looking for a fight, and now his reprehensible behavior has cut short a promising young mascot's career. The inevitable punishment couldn't be severe enough.

The fan's superpower was an above normal amount of stupidity.

I saw this coming three months ago, when she invaded the Yankees clubhouse and gave the finger to Mets fans.

Good thing Diaz was out there on Quick Draw McGraw's night off.

New season of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia just kicked off and it seems like they haven't missed a beat.

What the article fails to mention is that Diaz and the fan are actually two cool, straight dudes married together.

To be safe they should tase all the fans in Philly when they come through the gate.

Except that he's in a RED spandex suit for some reason.*

I'm starting to get a little antsy. I just changed my laptop over to play European region DVDs. But at the HMV here no one had ever heard of It's Always Sunny. I haven't seen season 5 yet, there had better be some UK region DVDs floating around somewhere.

*Unless I am missing some important information from season 5.

Agree - they tackle everything - such a great show

Edit - what a short shitty post....

I love it's always Sunny so much. It's the funniest and stupidest show all wrapped in to 22 minutes each week.

I've bought the Season 1 and 2 DVD set 4 times as I beg people to watch it.

This guy makes the security crew look freaking terrible. One of them simply falls down basically running in a straight line. Diaz was probably embarrassed for them.

How long do you suppose this guy runs free if Diaz doesn't trip him (it was a trip, not a tackle)? He looked young, fit and ready to go. The security guards looked...not any of those things. I could imagine the dude in red running for half an hour avoiding security.

Presumably the fan was left-handed or Diaz wouldn't have made contact.

"I figured the guy would rather me trip him rather than get tased," Diaz said

"I like the Philly fans," Diaz said. "They're fun to mess around with. Sometimes they're attention-starved. So if you turn around during the game, they'll treat you right. They've always treated me right here."

Diaz comes off sounding pretty awesome here.

Apparently a few years ago a security guard in Atlanta banged his head on the ground chasing a fan - Diaz said when he saw the guard fall he thought of that, which led to the trip.

Philadelphia Fans v. L.A. fans. Years ago during a Bears/Rams game in L.A. a young fan was running around the field clumsily chased by ushers. He ran too close to the Bears huddle. The Bears tight end, Mike Ditka, stepped out and leveled the kid. Security carried the kid off the field and the L.A. fans booed Ditka for the rest of the game. In Philly Ditka would be elected mayor.

1. Matt Diaz is awesome. Having to start Brandon Beachy in the season's most pivotal series to date? Not so much.

Presumably the fan was left-handed or Diaz wouldn't have made contact.

2. This is a great line. Good work.

I was there last night, as I was for the taser game. Both were Dollar Dog Nights, and I have to imagine that's no coincidence: cheaper food leaves more discretionary money for beer. More beer = more idiotic behavior.

Primey for #17.

Yeah, #17 wins we can all go home. Beats the hell out of my 'if you've ever seen Diaz hit you knew he wouldn't have the patience to wait for security to catch the guy' joke.
