Yankees acquire Tim Locastro from Diamondbacks as season crumbles

The Yankees are starting small in an attempt to turn their miserable 41-39 season around.

The team announced it obtained Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Tim Locastro for Double-A right-hander Keegan Curtis.

Locastro will take some of the weight off Aaron Judge, as he can make starts in center field against left-handers.

In addition, the 28-year-old is a major speed threat. In 2019, he stole 17 bases in 91 games. He holds the record of most stolen bases without being caught to start a career at 29.

Judge is hitting .080 as a center fielder. You have to wonder if moving to a more difficult position in the middle of a season is affecting his hitting as well.

Locastro's just not as interesting when he's not getting plunked at a 40-HBP rate.

I get their meaning but that still sounds odd to me. This season, Locastro's OPS+ is 38, for his career 78. There are usually 30 guys floating around with speed and no hitting ability ... and per Rfield, Locastro is nothing special defensively either. I doubt they trot him out there for more than 5 starts.

I wonder if they called the Cubs about Marisnick and what the Cubs asked for.

sure, the Mets would listen if the Yankees just "have to have" Albert Almora.

I sat in first row CF on Saturday, and saw some rocket throws from him.

he can't hit and - as we learned last night, sadly - he can't pitch, either.

but he can field.

It means Locastro can be the platoon, "one of the starters is hurt" guy. Given their injury rates in recent years that means an oddly important role. And thanks to LeMahieu's versatility they have a roster spot for what is obviously a luxury role.

If everybody's healthy Locastro is pretty much a straight PR, but ... it's been a while since everybody's been healthy.

So, a pinch runner is gonna turn around the Yankees' season?

#6 Don't forget he brings a sense of perspective. He's seen true disaster. And contributed to it to the extent that a guy playing part time can. 7-66 with two doubles and two walks (but seven HBP) since the end of April.

Yankees' in-season acquisitions so far:

Rougned Odor, 91 OPS+

Wandy Peralta, 83 ERA+

Tim Locastro, 38 OPS+

I hope they play the #### out of him. Give him ABs. Many ABs.

their miserable 41-39 season

As a Tigers fan, I'd just like to say, "Shut the f%$k up".

That's the curse of Tiger Stadium taking it out on the team.

How much digital ink can possibly be warranted for such a trivial transaction?

#14 Locastro's such an odd collection of talents. I find him fun to talk about. And he might just have decided to go full Ron Hunt -- which could be interesting.

I think the fans of just about every team except the Dodgers and Red Sox are right there with you.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are three games over .500 and in second place, and their fans are lamenting that their "window has closed." The race for "most entitled fanbase" is going to be a barnburner this year.

What a great headline. Whose season is crumbling? Both of them! And Tim Locastro will stop the breach!
   19. Ron J Posted: July 02, 2021 at 02:12 PM (#6027438)
#17 Schwarber's recent play is certain to bring out all of the second guessers. And the Cubs always have plenty of those.

And 6.5 games out in the division and 6 games out of the wild card. Bryant, Rizzo, Baez are all FA at the end of the year and if the team has made a serious offer to any of them recently, it's news to us. That's a closed window.

Tiger Stadium actually "played" Yankee Stadium in the movie 61*. (In fact, my wife and I are in one of the crowd scenes!)

"Miserable 41-39 season." This is not to say that Yankees fans are spoiled, but just to say that Cashman and company* really are victims of their own success. What other team is in the playoffs pretty much every year and even their "bad" years are like 84-78? The Dodgers seem to have reached that level for several years now and the Braves had a great decade-long run a while back. But this has been the story of the Yankees for like 25 years now. As a Red Sox fan, who watches his team come in last when it has a bad season, sign me up for that kind of misery!

*I always thought Girardi got a bit of a bum rap due to these expectations.
   23. Howie Menckel Posted: July 03, 2021 at 01:11 PM (#6027532)
I think even his own family would say that Girardi is a bit of a ... tiresome person. The Phillies are learning this now.

I keep asking social media commentators, who almost to a person excoriated Gabe Kapler, how Joe Girardi churns out worse records with better talent than Kapler had. I have yet to get a bite other than injuries or bad bullpens, which of course Kapler faced as well.

And I have not been a Kapler fan, I just think that Girardi is mediocre-er.
If he can bring the Giants the division title this year over LA and SD, I’ll have to reevaluate Gabe. My son in SF has no logical explanation for the year to date.
   25. GregD Posted: July 03, 2021 at 04:11 PM (#6027551)
I am all for the skepticism of managers’ impact but if the giants win the division they should build a statue to Kapler. I can’t imagine how he’s the X factor but it’s also impossible to explain why they are so good so somebody’s doing something right

He wasn't in Miami or New York. He was damn good.
