Yankees Decline 2020 Option On Edwin Encarnacion

Edwin Encarnacion is unlikely to be returning to the Yankees in 2020.

New York acquired Encarnacion from the Mariners in June for a minor league pitcher and some cash. His bat helped the team quite a bit during the regular season, but Encarnacion struggled heavily in the playoffs, especially in the ALCS against the Astros. He seemed completely lost at the plate.

The Yankees announced Thursday that they would not be exercising the club option on Encarnacion’s contract for next season, thus making him a free agent.

This move isn’t too surprising after Encarnacion’s poor showing against Houston. The slugger just couldn’t get his bat going, as he managed just one hit in 18 at-bats in the ALCS. His batting average for the series was a paltry .056.

And now, the hot stove season begins in earnest…..

He'd be a nice consolation prize if JD Martinez doesn't opt out, or for teams that miss out on JD. Makes sense that the Yankees would let him go though, with their surfeit of position players

2019 Yankees had CC, Didi, and EE.

2 down, one to go...

There really wasn’t 2020 roster room for Encarnacion, so I doubt his playoff performance had much to do with the decision. The Yankees want to keep Stanton healthy, which likely means more DH time. There are also extra bats at 1st & 3rd base that need to be accommodated (which can be done at less cost than Encarnacion). Encarnacion’s availability may make it slightly more likely that J. D. Martinez doesn’t opt out this year.

The monkey puts E5 (I'll never forgive him for his D when he was on the Reds) at 29 HRs next year. That would be 443 for his career. Got to be a small chance that he can wiggle over 500.

I liked EE a lot. He had a bad series but he seemed to work hard and play hard, came back from injuries several times too. Wonder where he will go.

“From the Department of Redundancy Department“

That’s a federal agency which did most of its hiring from the University of Maryland University College.

Actual name of the institution. They recently changed their name to something less redundant, but for years have saturated the radio waves with commercials in the DC-Baltimore area.

I did not expect to see that EE actually has more career HR than Nelson Cruz. Both started in 2005, but EE got more regular playing time early, and still leads 414-401 even though Cruz leads since 2009.

Was it the University of Maryland that once said in their press guide (for either football or men's basketball) that the team was undefeated when scoring more than their opponents?

I can see the Yanks' decision, but I'm still gonna miss that parrot walk.

during the World Series, they referred to the Nationals as "4-0 in elimination games."

would have been more impressed if they were, say, 2-2 in such games yet reached the World Series anyway.

I think it still counts if it is the other team that is facing elimination.

Your team could have a seven game series that goes WWWLLLW and you would be 1-3 in so-called elimination games but advancing anyway.

Or the legendary IUPUI in your brackets.

Not to be confused with IUP, the (not redundant but still wacky) Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Haven’t seen that usage. “Potentially clinching” seems the more common usage for a team with a chance to win the series.
