Yankees GM says ‘you can’t have’em all’ after not signing Manny Machado

When a major free agent hits the open market, it’s always anticipated that the New York Yankees will emerge as a primary suitor. It’s an expectation that never really changes, regardless of who the free agent is, how large the Yankees payroll is, or what the team’s actual needs might be.

So when an elite infielder like Manny Machado, who’s already a four-time All-Star, who’s still only 26 years old with his prime years ahead of him, and who’s desire to play for the Yankees seemed clear, everyone waited to see how aggressive general manager Brian Cashman would be.

And then they kept waiting… and waiting… and waiting, only to learn after Machado agreed to a 10-year, $300 million with the San Diego Padres that the Yankees never formally made an offer.

On the bright side, the Marlins are rapidly becoming a farm club for the Yankees, so there’s that…

Jack Chesbro

Had to look this up to figure out how he was a free agent in the nineteen aughts. Left the Pirated for the Yankees before there was an agreement between the leagues.

He had that one great year, but overall, pretty underwhelming for a HOFer. 42 WAR, 17 WAA, one year of 10.4 but next best of 5.6. Looking for some modernish equivalents who never will sniff the Hall:

Wilbur Wood - 52, 26, high of 11.8 with another of 10.7.
Frank Tanana - 58, 20, 8.3
Johan Santana - 51, 33, 8.7
Sam McDowell - 43, 22, 8.3
John Matlack - 39, 19, 9.1
Mickey Lolich - 48, 17, 8.5
Mark Langston - 50, 23, 8.5
Ron Guidry - 48, 27, 9.6
Dwight Gooden - 48, 24, 12.2
Vida Blue - 45, 16, 9.0

Mickey Lolich is the best comp, not only by the numbers, but in how he compiled the numbers, not by being lights out like Santana or Guidry, but by throwing a shitton of innings at a good but not great rate. Lolich stayed on the ballot for 15 years, peaking early at 25.5%, but quickly dropped off after that, hanging on with 10% or less his last 11 years. I wouldn't put him in the Hall, but then I wouldn't put Chesbro in either.

Medich, at age 26 after seasons of 14-9, 19-15, and 16-16 at a little above league average ERA, was dealt to the Pirates in Dec. 1975 for prospect Willie Randolph (!), Ken Brett (!), and Dock Ellis (!).

a year later, Doc was shipped to Oakland with Tony Armas, Rick Langford, Doug Bair, and 1971 NL Saves leader Dave Giusti for Phil Garner and Tommy Helms.

Doc's next 5 seasons after leaving the Yankees included 4 at ERA+ of 99 or 100, and his career ERA+ was 99. #inningseater
