If the Angels are willing to pay Albert Pujols to be shitty for almost the entire length of his giant contract, they can pay Cole to be shitty for half that long. Show him the damn money.

OK Gerrit, you can fire Boras now and I can take it from here for a measly 4.2% of your SALARY package.

That's a serious offer. I think it gets done close to here.

Don't think anyone's going $300M for a pitcher, unless the AAV is lower. I mean if he rather have 300/10 than 245/7 you give it to him.

I'm hearing that he would prefer West Coast. Obviously that could be sportswriter bullshit. But if so, the question isn't whether Dodgers/Angels will beat it but whether they will match, or close enough.

If so, the Angels would be foolish not to match.

"Close to here" meaning time-wise or money-wise? The latter maybe, but this is a Boras client so I'll believe things get done quickly when I see it. Boras would wait until the opening pitch before conceding so much as a penny.

Nice money, if you can get it.

I would imagine if the Angels or Dodgers are around those figures that he'll just move back to SoCal and play?

Cole could move back to Newport Beach and be neighbours with Trout! Of course for Cole moving to Newport is a ho-hum experience since he was born there. So maybe he'll choose NY just so he can buy a $30 mil residence in a place he hasn't lived before?

It would be nice to have choices like this....

Money wise.

Very few players seem to care about location. It's only 3 months of actual living time. Most of them live in Florida anyway for tax reasons.

I usually agree, but if his actual factual home is already in SoCal, that gives him the opportunity of becoming the rare MLBer that gets to live in that one place he wants to live in for the entire year. I googled "where does Gerrit Cole live" and found an article that mentions the places he's stayed in Pittsburgh and Houston but still speaks of a roadtrip to face the Angels as a much anticipated trip "home" for him, and I suspect it doesn't mean that he and his wife are sharing the single bed in his high school bedroom.

That said, Boras clients are usually Boras clients for a reason...

I don't think he cares that much if the money is right. Yankees are going full court press.

No way the Angels get him. Cole's heard that Mike Trout's best days are behind him.
   13. rconn23 Posted: December 08, 2019 at 08:27 PM (#5906888)
I can't imagine picking the Angels simply because of location. I mean, they're not good. If being on the West Coast is a factor, the Dodgers seem like the pick. Otherwise, the Yankees are clearly the team poised to win now among the likely suitors.
   14. PreservedFish Posted: December 08, 2019 at 08:45 PM (#5906901)
"Win now" is less important when you're looking for an 8+ year contract, and for many players, I think location/atmosphere is more important than team quality. Cole brazenly disavowing himself of the Astros minutes after the WS ended kind of suggests that he's not really big on the team spirit thing.

Was Cole an Angels fan growing up?
   16. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: December 08, 2019 at 08:54 PM (#5906905)
From Wiki:

Cole is the elder of Mark and Sharon Cole's two children. He has one younger sister, Erin.[2] Cole grew up as a fan of the New York Yankees, as his father – raised in Syracuse, New York – passed down his affinity for the Yankees to his son.[59] He admires Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig and retired pitcher Mariano Rivera, both Yankees legends. Cole attended the 2001 World Series, of which the Yankees took part.[6][7]

Cole is married to Amy Crawford, the sister of San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford. They met when they attended UCLA.[60]

Seems like Cole might have as much affinity for the Yankees as Soc Cal.

Clearly they need to acquire Crawford like how the White Sox got Alonso and then signed Machado.

I suspect the Yankees will get Cole because Money>everything else. But if his childhood fandom was going to matter I’d think it would have been a lot more important when they drafted him in the first round out of high school.

Crawford is one of those players, like Josh Reddick, who has long hair that is literally never not sweaty. I wonder if Amy shares this affliction.

Oh, I don't think it really matters either, but neither does where he lives. He's going to take the most money.

That’s just effing absurd. I mean, it’s the Yankees, but...come on.

It's not often that teams like the Dodgers and Angels can be made to feel poor and puny, but... yeah. Jesus F. Christmas.
