Yankees’ Luke Voit not ready to cede playing time when Anthony Rizzo returns: ‘I deserve to play just as much as he does’

With Anthony Rizzo due to come off the COVID-19 injured list sometime soon, New York Yankees first baseman Luke Voit said he still expects to play when the three-time All-Star returns.

“I was top-10 MVP last year and I’ve been a great player for this organization for the last three years,” Voit said after Tuesday’s doubleheader sweep of the Boston Red Sox.

“I’m not going down. I want to play. Obviously, I know it will be tough with Rizzo, but I deserve to play just as much as he does. I led the league in home runs last year. I feel really good again.”

Voit was on the injured list with knee inflammation—his third IL stint of the season—when the Yankees acquired Rizzo from the Cubs at the trade deadline. Rizzo has been out since Aug. 7, while Voit returned to the lineup on Aug. 8.

Despite struggling for most of this season after hitting 22 home runs in 56 games last year, Voit has hit .243/.317/.486 with 3 homers and 9 RBIs in 10 games since his return, including a home run in the second game of the doubleheader.

I led the league in home runs last year.
The AL home run crown has been somewhat of a curse recently. Soler, K Davis, Trumbo and C Davis didn't have much left in their bats in the ensuing seasons.

With Stanton able to play the OF at least part time and CF still in flux (though Gardner has also played better since the All Star Break), there is playing time to go around for both Rizzo and Voit...he's competing for AB's more with Gardner as much as Rizzo at this play whoever of the two is hottest as long as the rest of the OF/DH options are healthy.

He's not wrong about playing time.
And it shouldn't be a problem...
Stanton in the OF
Rizzo at 1B
Voit DH

That's a nice order they got:

Old Man Gardner

too bad none of them pitch!

Chris Carter, Pedro Alvarez in the NL too.

Yankees are actually third in the American League in earned run average. Pitching has been fine. Poor hitting with runner in scoring position is the main problem.

And to reduce it crudely, the Yankees' OPS+ is a feeble 100, while their ERA+ is 118. And while their ERA is 3rd in the league, in Runs Scored they're 11th out of 15. Hopefully that'll improve as some key players move off the IL.

In 2017-18 the Yankees had multiple injuries that gave players like Gio and Gleyber and Voit more playing time. And this year with much of the pitching staff on the IL, they've gotten increasingly valuable roles out of the likes of Loaisiga, Cortes, Luetge, Abreu, Peralta and now Gil, who still hasn't allowed a run in his first three starts. At the start of the year very few Yankees fans had even heard of any of them other than Loaisiga, and before this year even Loaisiga never seemed anything special.

Yankees are 30th in Grounded into DP's. 0.93/game

You mean they're 1st out of 30. That's what you get from a lineup loaded with slow running right handed hitters, but at least lately they've started to steal bases at an MLB-leading rate, thanks to some of their emergency substitutes like Wade and Greg Allen

Well, he is wrong about playing time when compared to Rizzo ("Obviously, I know it will be tough with Rizzo, but I deserve to play just as much as he does."). Yes, Voit and Rizzo do have comparable offensive value, but one is an excellent fielder and the other is a distinctly below-average fielder. Also, one knows how to talk to the press and the other clearly has no idea. The chances that the Yankees sign Rizzo in the off-season and jettison Voit just went up a notch.

I'm sure that the Yankees will try to get Voit in the lineup 3 or 4 times a week by giving Stanton and Rizzo each a day off every week, and Stanton a couple of days in the outfield every week.

I thought this was a great, honest answer and in tune with a Yankees fan base. Not ceding any ground. Voit was the heart and soul of this team last year and it’s no coincidence they are playing better now that he’s back. Stanton should be able to play the OF - it’s not like he’s old. He used to be pretty good out there.

I doubt they are signing Rizzo - Voit is still a better (and cheaper) option for the cost conscious Yankees.

I’m enjoying seeing them roar back into the race. That’s a powerhouse lineup to contend with every night

Rizzo's obviously the better all-around player, and he adds a LHB to a lineup overloaded with righties. But Voit's just as good a hitter, he's two years younger, he's getting $4.7M and is under contract through 2024, while Rizzo's getting $16.5M and will be the subject of a bidding war in the offseason.

Rizzo's other advantage, though, is his durability. Voit's been on and off the IL for most of his time with the Yankees, three times already this season. That may enter into the Yankees' decision.

Personally I'd like the Yankees to try to sign Rizzo while keeping Voit. AFAIC the more expendable player is Gardner, who'll be 38 next week and is obviously near the end. His contract can be bought out for just $1.15M, and unless he goes on a tear for the next 10 weeks I can't see keeping him around for another year.

I doubt Voit’s comments will effect the Yankees’ decision-making. He didn’t say anything controversial, just that he thinks he deserves a chance to play. Rizzo would be nice to have, given his performance and the benefit of a left-handed bat, but he’s coming up on his age-32 season, so years & cost will be a factor. If Voit can stay healthy and match his prior performance, the Yankees will likely be less-inclined to stretch the budget for Rizzo, or someone else outside the organization.

I think it's good that players have a high opinion of themselves and Voit has been a damn good player - when available - for the most part. However, he is not Rizzo. I thought Rizzo was/is the best all-around player the Yankees have, maybe other than Judge.

As pointed out above, Rizzo's defense is so superior and Mattingly/Hernandez-like that he will be (for the rest of this season, anyway) a lifesaver for that putrid infield defense. If you're a NYY fan, you have to hope that his ability to cut down on their errors will help with their offense.

Still, this is a very vulnerable October-offense to pitch to. Too much swing and miss and you have to hope you get Stanton at just the right moment for him not to be a black hole.

As an aside, Gallo made a throw home from RF that was tremendous. I know he has a good arm but that was magnificent.
