The Yankees released third baseman Josh Donaldson from the roster before Tuesday’s game against the Tigers. Donaldson, the 2015 AL MVP, had been working his way back from a right calf strain that sidelined him in mid-July.
The 37-year-old had only played in 33 of New York’s 131 games this year, batting .142/.225/.434 with 10 home runs and 15 RBIs. He came to the Yankees in the March 2022 trade that sent Gary Sánchez and Gio Urshela to the Twins.

1. ERROR---Jolly Old St. NickThis year ... it's just 120 PA, and a 0.076 BABIP has got to be a fluke. Still replacement level despite missing 3 out of every 4 non-HR hits based on historical performance.
But the season's over, and he's not the future, so might as well free up the roster spot.
Less than one season of poor play treated as some unforgivable injustice. How dare they be saddled with bad players for 125 games!
I think he was always a redass. And this profile from 2017 suggests he made his share of enemies long before he got to New York, even if most of them were from the other teams (though two-time teammate Liam Hendriks has admitted to never liking him).
But there's no question that redassery plays a whole lot better when you're playing well and winning.
From the Yankees standpoint, he was horrible in the playoffs last year. He hit .172 with one extra-base hit in 36 PAs. Against Houston, he was up all the time with runners on base, and he K'd 10 times in 13 ABs.
Are the O's the new Cardinals? Maybe channelling some interdivision dark magic from the Rays?
