Yankees sign Ender Inciarte to minor league deal

The Yankees may have to wait until after the lockout to fully address a lack of depth in center field, but for now, they are taking a chance on a three-time Gold Glover.

The team signed Ender Inciarte to a minor league contract on Wednesday, according to its transactions page. The move can happen during the lockout because Inciarte was not on a 40-man roster to end last season.

The 31-year-old Inciarte, who was an All-Star in 2017, has spent eight seasons in the big leagues, batting .280 with 118 steals and a 91 OPS-plus. But he is better known for his defense in center field, which earned him Gold Gloves in three straight seasons from 2016-18, all while playing for the Braves.

Since his last Gold Glove season, though, Inciarte’s defense has fallen off according to advanced metrics. After piling up 35 defensive runs saved from 2016-18, according to FanGraphs, he combined for -1 defensive run saved from 2019-21 while also battling injuries.

His hitting fell off a cliff. If I remember correctly, lowest exit velocity in MLB?

Does this count as scabbing?

Well the players aren't on strike, and the owners IIRC have said they won't sign any players that are XX-B free agents, meaning 6 years of service time and ended the year on a 40-man roster. Inciarte was released in August.

yeah, minor league deals (like this) are fair game - no one is talking replacement games yet.
if (heh, if) this lockout extends into the season, minor league games are scheduled to go on as planned.

As a number 5 outfielder and late inning defensive replacement, it's a good move.
Though, that might be the death knell for Gardner.

Right now, Gardner would be the starting CF. They need someone a lot better than Inciarte to play CF. You simply CAN NOT start a season relying on Aaron Hicks.

Sure you can; it just means you'll end the season relying on someone else ...

Gardner has been a good custodian for NY for a long time, however having Gardner at his age and capabilities as the starting CF for the NY Yankees seems...well, underwhelming.

Rinse, repeat. Bernie Williams remained the Yankees' starting centerfielder long after his age and capabilities dictated otherwise.
