Yankees sign infielder Matt Carpenter

The New York Yankees announced on Thursday that they have signed three-time All-Star infielder Matt Carpenter to a Major League contract and added him to the active roster.

Carpenter, 36, has batted .262 (1,153-for-4,403) with 752R, 301 doubles, 28 triples, 155HR, 576RBI, 699BB and 27SB in 1,329 games over parts of 11 Major League seasons, all with the St. Louis Cardinals (2011-21). The left-handed hitter has appeared defensively at third base (671G/623GS), first base (333G/254GS), second base (246G/229GS), right field (19G/11GS) and left field (7G/3GS) in his career.

Gonna guess he hits .300/.340/.480 with 10 home runs in 250 PA and earns some MVP votes.

IF I WERE A CARPENTER, AND I WAS A YANKEE

If I were a Carpenter
And I was a Yankee,
Would you love me anyway?
Would you make me DH?

If a glove were my trade
Would you still find me,
Allowing me the plays I made,
Followin' behind me.

Save my AB through loneliness,
Save my AB for sorrow,
I'm given you my DH AB,
Come give me tomorrow.

If I worked my hand at bat,
Would you still play me?
Answer me, Aaron, "Yes I would,
I'll put you above Hicks."
If I were a Millar
with an old memory grinding,
Would you miss your 2003 HR,
And your soft shoe dancing?

If I were a Carpenter
And I was a Yankee,
Would you love me anyway?
Would you make me DH?
Would you love anyway?
Would you make me DH?

Babe Ruth built the house, but it's nice to have a Carpenter on hand for seasonal maintenance.

Um. For RoyalsRetro, and for anyone else who thinks that Matt Carpenter can still play, here are Carpenter's batting numbers from 2019 through today:

2019 33 STL NL 129 492 416 59 94 20 2 15 46 6 1 63 129 .226 .334 .392 .726 92 163 3 7 1 5 0 5H/3D
2020 34 STL NL 50 169 140 22 26 6 0 4 24 0 0 23 48 .186 .325 .314 .640 79 44 1 6 0 0 1 5D/3H
2021 35 STL NL 130 249 207 18 35 11 1 3 21 2 0 35 77 .169 .305 .275 .581 63 57 1 6 0 1 1 H43/5D1
2022 36 NYY AL 2 8 5 3 1 0 0 1 1 0 0 2 2 .200 .500 .800 1.300 277 4 0 1 0 0 0 /D

For some reason, BTF won't let me add any headers, so I should add that the entrees .226, .186, .169, and .200 are his batting averages the last four years.

No doubt he is well past his prime, but he sure was a thorn in the side of his opponents during the mid 2000 teens.
Plus, he made $90M. His family is set for generations to come.
Good on ya, lad

#6 good point, I'll ratchet my prediction with the Yankees down to .280/.330/.450 with 6 HR and 1 tenth place MVP vote.

RoyalsRetro - That's a great response. I still haven't figured out whether your original was meant to be irony or a real prediction, but in either case, good one!

It’s early, and asking a lot from The Magic of Pinstripes™️, but Carpenter is off to a slug-heavy 1.185 OPS in his first 4 games with the Yankees.
   11. baxter Posted: June 01, 2022 at 01:24 AM (#6079319)
10 yes, w/ 2 jacks in 4 games. If he maintains that pace the rest of the way, he'll get more than 1 MVP vote.

Carpenter was a nice fantasy player for a few years there because of the walks and positional flexibility. Zero speed, though.

He's kind of the infielder version of Tommy Pham.
Carpenter: .262/.368/.449, 122 OPS+ in ~1300 games
Pham: .263/.362/.443, 118 OPS+ in ~770 games
   13. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 03, 2022 at 10:17 PM (#6079809)
After another HR (#4) tonight, Carpenter is now at .263/.391/.895 for a 1.286 OPS. Also rumored to be in line for a big W. B. Mason endorsement deal.
   14. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 12, 2022 at 04:25 PM (#6081394)
With 2 HRs today (so far), Carpenter is hitting .304/.448/1.087, for a 1.535 OPS. Fear the Stache.

The Yankees MLB scouting is really good.
   16. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 02, 2022 at 02:05 PM (#6085359)
Carpenter hammered HR #7 today, and is now at .256/.396/.821, for a 1.217 OPS. Sure, that looks good superficially, but it’s 300 points lower than my last update!
   17. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 02, 2022 at 03:35 PM (#6085371)
Carpenter drilled another HR (#8) bringing him up to .293/.420/.902, for a 1.322 OPS, so perhaps he’s rebounding from his ‘slump’.
   18. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 10, 2022 at 08:46 PM (#6086177)

Well, Carpenter hammered his 10th Home Run tonight in only his 75th PA, so RoyalsRetro really got that one wrong, eh? Carpenter now at .339/.446/.871, for a 1.317 OPS. #Exceeding Expectations.

I wonder if there is a team that could have used a multi-positional player who is posting a 1.000+ ops...Even if the defense may not be good but they could you know make up for it with other players at elite level defense.
   20. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: July 11, 2022 at 07:16 AM (#6086197)
The best part is that when Carpenter sent out an email to all 30 teams, telling them about the many steps he's taken to correct his batting flaws, 29 of those teams didn't even bother to respond.
   21. Ron J Posted: July 11, 2022 at 08:31 AM (#6086199)
#20 Here's the thing. I wouldn't have responded either to the "batting flaws" Go ahead and name the last time a player of Carpenter's age identified a specific, correctable weakness and then corrected it.

Don't get me wrong, He's obviously doing something different and it's obviously working. And I love seeing things like this. Just wouldn't expect it.
   22. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: July 11, 2022 at 08:57 AM (#6086202)
Well, there was also the .991 OPS in AAA to go along with his narrative. I guess I don't see what the downside would've been to looking at Carpenter a bit more closely, although obviously I'm glad those other 29 teams didn't see it that way.
   23. Ron J Posted: July 11, 2022 at 09:09 AM (#6086203)
#22 Motivated multi-position veteran is a different narrative. He's the kind of guy who's always worth a look.

But I expect this to be another Trevino situation -- that he had great results for a time but will revert to his actual established level of talent going forward. And that's fine for the Yankees. They're a really good team right now without him.

Not really. If they were truly geniuses, or at least the sort who could learn from their mistakes, Joey Gallo would be a next door neighbor of Jimmy Hoffa.

Especially in a world where multiple teams have been willing to employ Robinson Cano.

Who had .354/.469/.911, 1.380 OPS, and 286 OPS+, with 13 HRs & 34 RBI in 31 games at the All-Star break? Carpenter is building a pretty good case for a 2023 contract somewhere.
   28. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: July 18, 2022 at 01:41 PM (#6087196)
Matt Carpenter has more HR than Luke Voit, Teoscar Hernandez, Luis Robert, Cody Bellinger, Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, Salvador Perez, or JD Martinez.

The Pirates are going to sign him for ten years in the offseason.

As a Yankee fan, I love their uncanny ability to get a Dead Cat Bounce out of freely-available veterans.

Not really unique to NY. The Red Sox have Michael Wacha at 6-1 and 2.2WAR, I'm sure the Cardinals and Rays each have like 3 guys they picked up off the scrap heap who are doing well.

If NY was so smart they wouldn't be playing Andy's favourite strike out king, Joey Gallo, on a regular basis.

Um. For RoyalsRetro, and for anyone else who thinks that Matt Carpenter can still play, here are Carpenter's batting numbers from 2019 through today:

2021 35 STL NL 130 249 207 18 35 11 1 3 21 2 0 35 77 .169 .305 .275 .581 63 57 1 6 0 1 1 H43/5D1

2022 numbers are now .354/.469/.911/1.380. But hey, if he strikes out 66 consecutive times, his slugging will drop below .500

Albert Pujols was league average with the Dodgers last year. And Tyler Anderson is an All-Star with them this year!

If he can keep this up for about 3 years, he's got a nice HOF case.

I figured I'd look up Carpenter on HQ, expecting to see a 4-alarm siren on "regression to the mean."

his BA is .354 - and his xBA is .360.

that is the highest I have EVER SEEN in this many AB. even the guys who hit .350 for a season don't hit .350 for xBA.

HQ remains amazingly bearish on his rest-of-season projection - .244, 4-11-15-1 in 63 AB.

Carpenter has 13 HR in 79 AB, but the Yankees will use him LESS in the second half?
lolz
   37. Darren Posted: July 21, 2022 at 03:32 PM (#6087638)
I was looking at ZIPS and noticing the huge improvement from his preseason projection to his ROS projection:

Preseason: 372 pa, .208/.328/.364, 0.8 WAR
ROS: 136 pa, .228/.348/.446, 0.5 WAR

Don't remember seeing that kind of improvement for an established player before. Yowza.

   38. Ron J Posted: July 21, 2022 at 03:53 PM (#6087650)
#37 Presumably recognition that he's figured out Yankee Stadium. There's no way that .371/.522/1.143 is an ability level but it does seem plausible to expect him to continue to get significantly better results there.
   39. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 21, 2022 at 07:53 PM (#6087703)
Carpenter has hit .313/.389/.667 on the road this year.
