Yankees starter Domingo Germán ejected over sticky stuff one night after Aaron Judge cheating accusations

New York Yankees right-hander Domingo Germán was ejected from Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays (NYY 6, TOR 3) after being checked for foreign substances, but denied that he had run afoul of MLB’s sticky stuff rules. Germán retired the first nine batters he faced, then was stopped when he came out to start the fourth inning. All four umpires were part of the inspection.

Crew chief James Hoye told reporters, including MLB.com, Germán’s hand was the “stickiest I’ve ever felt,” and added it was “definitely not rosin.”  Here is the inspection and the ejection:

Shouldn't the Yankees forfeit the game for this? (Actually, shouldn't the Yankees forfeit all of their games, forever?)

It seems either the Yankees pitchers are cheating a lot or the team is employing David Cone as a special instructor.

I don't know about the German incident, but we've reached new levels of anti "cheating" hysteria if a simple eye glance is now enough to elicit accusations. It wouldn't have been against the rules even if a coach was relaying signs.

I posted this is in Judge thread but the Blue Jays pitcher admitted he was ripping pitches such that 1st base coach could see the pitch he was throwing who was then relaying signs to Judge (presumably ) so there was something going on but it wasn't cheating just old fashioned sign stealing

Hate to see it, very concerning.

I like having Hoye out there enforcing the rules. He's clearly the only one, but it's good to make the guys playing near the edge have to trim their sails or get tossed out. It should have happened last time too, but I'll take what I can get. Frankly the pitchers have enough advantage these days, so doctoring the ball is just too much in an environment where people are proposing moving the mound back and changing the ball.

It'll be interesting to see if Cole's pitches have a bit less bite on them after seeing his teammate tossed for cheating. I'm certain the Jays will be on the umps if they don't keep a close eye on Cole tonight.

It’s probably time for MLB to look into developing some objective measure of how much stickiness is allowable rather than leaving it up to subjective individual umpire assessments.

I guess any time with this umpire crew and rosin it is "Arm Is This Day" and over for German

German to umpire : you started this, not me
Umpire to German : no you started it, you invaded Poland

At that point the crew chief told the umpire....."No don't!!!! Do your Jimmy Cagney!!!!"

They should check German every day and twice on Domingo ...

what, only corny jokes about his surname allowed? Tough crowd.

Judge goes deep again, to straight away Center High, high into the camera well, so that is now 6 Home runs in the last 5 games.
   21. John Northey Posted: May 18, 2023 at 10:01 PM (#6128998)
As a Jays fan I just don't get why they keep pitching to Judge. The home runs were all meatballs. Just plain old dumb to throw those to him - keep it outside the strike zone and if he takes a walk so be it.
   22. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 19, 2023 at 01:15 AM (#6129043)
Judge was 6-for-14 in the 4 Toronto games, with 4 HRs & 5 BB, for a gaudy .429/.579/1.357 stat line. That’s 32 career HRs against the Blue Jays for Judge (in 102 career games), topping Jorge Posada (31, in 186 games) for the most by any Yankee.
   23. John Northey Posted: May 19, 2023 at 07:58 PM (#6129138)
And another Yankee with sticky stuff given a second chance - seems the Yankees are special or something and keep getting extra chances.
   24. Mayor Blomberg Posted: May 19, 2023 at 08:16 PM (#6129142)
23 - OK.End of each inning, pitcher gives his fielding glove to the corner umpire on his way back to the dugout. The umpire in return gives him a pair of gloves to be worn in the dugout. When he's on the mound again, he gives those gloves to the umpire and gets his fielding glove back. Even better, the glove is placed in the coaching box, and if the coach strays far enough for a player on the opposing team to steal it, the pitcher plays without a glove.

Two of Schneider's problems sorted.
   25. John Northey Posted: May 19, 2023 at 08:27 PM (#6129145)
24 - the rule is if you have too much sticky stuff or the wrong stuff on your hands you are ejected. Period. End of story. No 'cheat until caught, then wash your hands and all is good' rule, unless of course you are a Yankee. If that is to be the rule then watch every pitcher use everything they can in inning #1.

If that is to be the rule then watch every pitcher use everything they can in inning #1.

So far this year, the first inning just barely trails the third inning for most runs surrendered, so that would actually be a good strategy.

Tonight @CIN, NYY SP Clarke Schmidt checked after first inning, as are all. It was a bit of a long chat, with only the 3B ump, but an eyebrow was raised and some words were exchanged.
Bottom of the fifth, gets examined by the entire crew as he takes the field. Sent down the steps into clubhouse with a shrug to wash up his arms and hands.
Mgr Aaron Boone strolls out and chats with the gang of four.
Then mgr David Bell comes out and chats.
Schmidt trots back out and gets approval.
Bell returns to field again to the home plate ump. I'm terrible at lip-reading, but it looks like "THAT'S F*CKING BULLSH*T" as he gestures his hand up and down on the back of his other hand/wrist that even the LF bleachers could see.
Bell gets tossed from the game.

That’s the rule for foreign substances, not rosin.

Not so. From an article on Scherzer's suspension,
The rule on sticky substances states that "player use of rosin always must be consistent with the requirements and expectations of the Official Baseball Rules. When used excessively or otherwise misapplied (i.e., to gloves or other parts of the uniform), rosin may be determined by the umpires to be a prohibited foreign substance, the use of which may subject a player to ejection and discipline. ... Moreover, players may not intentionally combine rosin with other substances (e.g., sunscreen) to create additional tackiness."

Scherzer was allowed to wash, too, so it seems clear that there is an intermediate area for legal substances like rosin, where the pitcher will receive a warning and be required to wash. BTW, the article linked in #29 has Scherzer ejected because he had rosin on his glove, which isn’t allowed.

To make the meaning of the quoted passage in 28 a little more clear
The rule on sticky substances states that "player use of rosin always must be consistent with the requirements and expectations of the Official Baseball Rules. Not will subject the player.

From an article on the Yankees holding each other accountable regarding sticky stuff,

[Pitch coach Matt] Blake was one of the Yankees personnel who went over to feel German’s hand shortly after he was ejected.

“It just felt sticky,” Blake said. “They weren’t wrong — that was too much. I don’t know what he was doing to apply it, but you cross the line on their end and I couldn’t argue with it.”

Asked if [umpire crew chief] Hoye was wrong and it was just rosin, Blake said it was “hard to say.”

“I try not to venture into the speculation of it or where it came from,” Blake said. “They said it was too sticky and it was.”
