Yasiel Puig shows he’s still Yasiel Puig with a wave and a kiss on the basepaths

Yasiel Puig might be on his third team in the last calendar year, but he’s still Yasiel Puig. That identity was in full view as the Cleveland Indians outfielder ran the bases on Friday in an American League Central showdown.

After singling to lead off the ninth inning against the Minnesota Twins, Puig ran all the way to third on a throwing error from Twins pitcher Randy Dobnak. For those not paying close attention, it was a standard advancement off an error.

Those focusing on the runner, however, got a pair of those quintessential Puig moments. As he ran past second, the Wild Horse waved goodbye to the Twins defenders in right field.

After he slid safely into third, Puig only got up after blowing a kiss to the home crowd.

Do you suppose he regrets not making Marty Brennaman’s head explode while he still had the chance?

...which explains why he's on his third team in the last calendar year.

Wait...he waved? AND blew a kiss? My god this man needs to be stopped, stopped I say!

hahaha.

I never understood some Dodgers' problems with him. Doesn't mean they didn't make a good trade getting rid of him, saving money, and getting a couple good prospects back.

Geoff Blum showed he was Yasiel Puig in the 2005 World Series when he blew a kiss after hitting a home run.

I loved him here but Puig... required effort. It could be exhausting. Much of that is the fault of unhinged critics, like the columnist who said a roster with Puig - exfiltrated from Cuba via shady people who dabble in violence - literally put fans in physical danger.

I can understand disliking Puig. Some of the antics are a bit over the top sometimes depending on where ones personal threshold for such behavior is. The thing that’s always bothered me isn’t that some dislike him, it’s the level of venom they use to express that dislike.

The problem with Puig is he's not good enough to be this kind of hot dog. When you're Reggie Jackson you can do this stuff, and people will generally laugh and go along. When you're averagish, it becomes annoying.

Puig is just about the most fun player in the majors right now. After his mad dash around the bases against the Brewers, he said something like "There are things that only I can do, being Puig." I'd love to see him on the Rockies.

Yeah, stars can get away with a lot more than scrubs, or even average-ish players. But IIRC Puig was drawing this kind of flak even when he was actually playing like a star (2013/2014). He just seems like one of those guys that has a talent for annoying the people around him.

I think Reggie was a thousand times more irritating than Puig is. There's at least sometimes a childlike joy to Puig's grandstanding - with Reggie, it never came across as anything other than him being a dick for the sake of being a dick.

I hated Reggie, even when he was a Yankee, but you gotta admit, that guy could back up his act.

That's the difference here: spontaneous joy and goofing around when serendipity leaves something odd in your path is one thing, but mocking a defense in the middle of a misplay where anyone with decent speed could have jogged into third just as easily is sort of dumb. Lick your bat and be weird, fine, but he'd go crazy if opposing players blew kisses to him after every error he made. Maybe the lack of self-awareness is the key. I don't know, I usually like him when it's just him, but some of it is not as fun when he's triumphing over the mundane.
