Yasiel Puig signs with Atlanta Braves

The Yasiel Puig show is headed to Atlanta.

Puig, the 29-year-old polarizing outfielder, is joining the Atlanta Braves, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, as they try separate themselves in the competitive NL East. Puig was the last notable free agent on the market.

We mostly know Puig in Dodger blue, having spent his first six seasons in L.A. after being signed out of Cuba, but last year, he split time with the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians. A preseason trade sent him to the rebuilding Reds and the Indians were hoping to get a trade-deadline boost out of Puig as they chased the Twins in the AL Central.

Puig was Puig in 2019, even outside of L.A. He hit .267/.327/.458 combined, with 24 homers and 84 RBIs. He plays solid defense and has a laser arm, but when you’re talking about Puig, you’re also talking about one baseball’s biggest personalities and some decent-sized baggage that some fans will never be able to forget. He’s sure to deliver highlights on the field, and all some surprises, like different hair colors or licking his bat.

Given that Markakis opted out of the season, I guess he was their only real option to block playing time for Austin Riley.

Good signing. With Markakis opting out, Freeman sidelined for the time being after testing positive for COVID, and the DH in use, there's plenty of playing time available. Depth could be more important this year than it usually is.

polarizing outfielder

Finally a position where my skills are major-league level!

The all-polarizing team (do not take this seriously for one second):

C: AJP
1B: Garvey**
2B: Backman
3B: Huff
SS: Jeter
OF: Milton Bradley, Puig, Chad Curtis
SP: Clemens

** probably not actually polarizing, I think everybody dislikes him now

The all-polar team (thanks intertubes)

C: David Ross (Sir James Clark Ross)
1B: George Scott
2B: Nick Franklin

And I'm done unless I keep repeating Scott, Ross and Franklin. (Just learned that it's "Peary" not "Perry")

No Chris Truby?

To make it less smart, you can add Billy North, Dick Pole, and Pete "Polar Bear" Alonso. Ron Cey's species mostly stays around the coast and doesn't venture to the South Pole.

There have been two Shacklefords, zero Nansens, and no Cherry-Garrards.

This probably disqualifies Curtis, then, as he's presently doing time for multiple sexual assaults. Maybe Carl Everett can take his spot on the team.
   8. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 14, 2020 at 06:27 PM (#5962888)
If Huff is "polarizing" because a bunch of a$$holes presumably like him for being an a$$hole, then Schilling is your No. 2 starter.
   9. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 14, 2020 at 06:28 PM (#5962889)
Oh, and of course Bonds for OF.
   10. John DiFool2 Posted: July 14, 2020 at 07:14 PM (#5962895)
Dykstra belongs on there somewhere too.
   11. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 14, 2020 at 07:17 PM (#5962897)
Does anyone like Dykstra?
   12. Walt Davis Posted: July 14, 2020 at 07:26 PM (#5962899)
zero Nansens

Not in the majors

There's also an Amundsen who does show up but has no info. Out of Augustana, I'm guessing he's a late-round draft pick (or amateur FA) in the mid-2010s who never played but a web search didn't turn up anything definitive.
   13. Walt Davis Posted: July 14, 2020 at 07:30 PM (#5962901)
Yeesh, sorry, didn't remember that Curtis was that big of a creep, was trying to avoid the sex offeenders.

FTR, I wouldn't consider Puig to be particularly polarizing. He seems, at worst, in the "doesn't take the game seriously enough" bucket.

To further expand the parameters I suggest JT Snow and David Freese...

Tim Hudson could pitch.

Eric Davis in the outfield.

How does Milton Bradley make this list? Does he have a secret fan club?

I’m going to go with Larry Bowa, Albert Belle, Carlos zambrano, Scott Rolen, Gary Sheffield, Alex Rodriguez, and Pete rose. Nyjer Morgan comes to mind and for cardinal fans tino Martinez has to be in the list. Dick Allen gets a mention but frankly I think it is underserved. Tried to stay away from PED guys but A-Rod has so many other ways to annoy you, he had to be on the list. Puig definitely belongs. Maybe Garry Templeton for giving the fans the middle finger. And I guess you’d have to have ty Cobb on your team. And Lenny D was a good add above.

Harry caray could be your broadcaster. TLR would be the manager.
   17. Ron J Posted: July 15, 2020 at 09:03 AM (#5963000)
#16 I kind of liked the young Bradley. Mind you that's just a product of not knowing much about him.

Tim Hudson?

Brandon Phillips?

I'd think any Let the Kids Play types would be on any polarizing list, as your various bat flippers and other "celebrants" seem to have detractors and supporters in equal measure.

Shackleton.

Other candidates:

Marlon Byrd
Ryan Cook
Dick Ellsworth
Rick Wilkins
David Ross
Tim Hudson
Drew Henson
Jay Bruce
Don Larsen
Cecil Cooper
Joe Jackson
Brad Wellman
James Baldwin

Unfortunately Joe Shackleton and Mush Higgins never made it to the majors.
   21. PreservedFish Posted: July 15, 2020 at 12:09 PM (#5963044)
I know it's Shackleton. Shackleford was the closest I could get.
   22. mathesond Posted: July 15, 2020 at 12:30 PM (#5963052)
Might there be room for Manny Ramierez (in the "doesn't take the game seriously enough" group), and Jose Bautista?

I'm sure Dave Stieb ticked off a few of his teammates whenever an error was made.
   23. Ron J Posted: July 15, 2020 at 12:56 PM (#5963066)
#22 Jim Palmer too. Lefty Grove was … occasionally irascible. Babe Ruth could be a real dick, but seemingly his teammates generally didn't care. Young Ted Williams had plenty of issues with established teammates.
   24. phredbird Posted: July 15, 2020 at 02:36 PM (#5963091)

no, i like garvey at first as a polarizing figure.

he's still worshipped by a certain generation of dodger fans in LA who miss the garvey/lopes/russell/cey days. they are as boring as the real oldtimers who pine for the days of maury wills and sandy.

when garvey's weird shiny plastic surgery-enhanced face shows up at old timer events there's a mob scene for autographs.

   25. The Duke Posted: July 15, 2020 at 03:39 PM (#5963133)
Palmer is a good one
   26. Hank Gillette Posted: July 15, 2020 at 09:53 PM (#5963253)
How does this team not have room for Dave Kingman?
   27. Mayor Blomberg Posted: July 15, 2020 at 11:13 PM (#5963259)
Sheffield? Dick Allen? Some of the people on the list seem less polarizing than straight-up dickheads.
   28. Mayor Blomberg Posted: July 15, 2020 at 11:15 PM (#5963260)
If Shoeless Joe is on the list, then Pete Rose is eligible.

Jack Morris and Jim Rice were quite polarizing for their HOF inductions...

putting the pola in polarizing:

https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/mlb-rumors-yasiel-puig-remains-free-agent-after-positive-coronavirus-test

Yasiel Puig was expected to sign his deal with the Atlanta Braves shortly, but that reportedly no longer will happen.

Puig announced Friday that he has tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19). In the wake of the positive test, major league sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal that Puig will no longer be signing with the Braves.
