You Are Cordially Invited to SOFTBALL IN THE CITY

Permit application process has been started, with any luck we’ll be frolicking in the North Meadow of Central Park some sunny Saturday in July or August.* Attendance will be taken! Those not in attendance will be talked smack of!

Further details will be posted as they become available, or as I remember them. If you’re in contact with primates (or other beings) who don’t regularly visit the site, make sure to let ‘em know! They don’t need to be good, there are already enough of you who make me look bad.

RSVP before game time, whenever that turns out to be. Or just show up.

*Okay, I requested 11 - 2 on July 20, we’ll see what happens
**Per post #130 below, it’s Saturday, August 10, 11 - 2 on North Meadow field #4. I’ll try to keep the info up here up to date with the latest status. -vi

and I might have broken my thumb on that tag play at first in the 1st inning...

Whoops.

hazards of the game...if it is broken (and i think its just pretty badly jammed), it would be the 4th time in about 6 years, so at this point I'm willing to say the thumb is just defective and needs to be replaced.

I knew I should have slid into 1B, like I've screamed at every player in history not to do.

Introducing sliding into the BBTF Softball Game does not seem like a sound injury-reduction strategy.

a few of us have slid face-first - but that wasn't near the base, and it wasn't intentional.

July 18 is also bad for me next year. That's all I know right now.

While considering next year... I noticed in the booking list they had us as "non-renewing". I know renewing bookings get priority. Any idea what we'd need to do to get our annual game recognized as renewing?

play better?
get younger?

they may have invisible drones that monitor the games making these decisions based on algorithms and actuarial tables.

Figure out how to do that, and we can hire the freaking Yankees and Mets to come play a private game for our amusement.

I seriously considered coming this year; I live about 60 miles from Manhattan and recently lost about 75 pounds. (Can't do anything about being in my 50s, tho...)

I am skeptical that the NYC Parks & Rec reservation "system" is more sophisticated than some lady at a desk with a phone and a 20-sided die. When it rings, she rolls the die. If it's a 20 she answers. If the person on the phone asks "Is my request confirmed yet?" she rolls again, and if it's anything but a 20 she says "No, check back later."

I believe that's for leagues that need to reserve fields for multiple dates during the season, eg, "2 fields each Saturday July & Aug from 10-2." Nobody gets to book a field for next summer until sometime this fall.

Dude, that puts you near the middle of our age distribution. I never played BBTF softball until I was in my 60s, and that was the first time I'd swung a bat in anger in 20+ years.

I'm 49 and they had me playing shortstop. You'll fit right in.

We grumble about aches and whatever, but this is a great event every year. Definitely come to next year's game.

I am so sorry that I was unable to make it, guys. Glad to hear it went forward anyway and was such a success. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

What did you do instead, Brian? We need to know so that we can snark on what a poor choice (obviously!) you made for the SO's birthday.
