Complete game by both starters in Game 1 of the Phillies @ Nationals doubleheader. Pretty rare in 2020, no? Nationals won 5-1 behind Austin Voth’s best effort of his career, while Aaron Nola took the loss, without much help from his defense.
   2. Walt Davis Posted: September 22, 2020 at 06:16 PM (#5978105)
Less rare with 6.5-7 inning games which I think they've decided do not count as complete games.
   3. spycake Posted: September 22, 2020 at 06:24 PM (#5978109)
Still complete games, just can’t be official no-hitters.
   4. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 22, 2020 at 07:10 PM (#5978117)
3-run HR by Juan Soto gives the Nationals a 4-2 lead over the Phillies in Game 2 of the doubleheader, and moves Soto past Frank Robinson & Ronald Acuna for undisputed possession of 4th place on the Age-21 HR Leaderboard. Only 4 behind Eddie Mathews for 3rd place, but the shortened season may put it out of reach.

Andrelton Simmons opts out of the remainder of the season. No reports of recent Covid cases, or possible exposure, for the Angels, so, unless there is something yet to be reported, this seems to be an impending free agent on a team out of the playoff race deciding to blow off the last week of the season.

I asked this in the wrong omnichatter, so I'll ask here too: is Max Kepler really european, or was he born on an air base or something?
   9. phredbird Posted: September 22, 2020 at 09:25 PM (#5978136)

cards ahead 3-0 in the 4th. dylan carlson has hit a double and a triple, so he's done most of the work towards hitting for the cycle.

his triple was a leadoff hit. bader of course strikes out, wong walks and now a f---ing double play where edmon obviously beat the throw and the idiot umps overturn the safe call. jiminy christmas christ on a crooked crutch.
   10. phredbird Posted: September 22, 2020 at 09:26 PM (#5978137)

also ... KC manager mike matheny gets ejected for arguing balls and strikes.

today is his 50th birthday.
   11. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 22, 2020 at 09:31 PM (#5978139)
Down 7-6 in the 8th, the Nationals Yadiel Hernandez hit his 1st MLB HR to walk off the Phillies, 8-6 in Game 2. Phillies playoff hopes took a big hit today.
   12. phredbird Posted: September 22, 2020 at 09:34 PM (#5978140)

goldschmidt leads off the 5th with a double.

if the cardinals do not score this man, i am switching over to the g-dam basketball game.

sick of this.

for corn's sake.

2 for 10 so far tonight with RISP.

Reds vs Mil.... both are in contention, and half a game back behind the Cardinals... Cardinals have something like 5 games against the Brewers remaining, so it somewhat makes sense to root for the Brewers, but it really doesn't... Ultimately it boils down to the Cardinals destiny is in their own hands.
   16. phredbird Posted: September 22, 2020 at 09:43 PM (#5978145)

... miller gets a gift call on strike 3 ...

finally, finally he doubles and goldy comes home.
   17. phredbird Posted: September 22, 2020 at 09:44 PM (#5978146)

... and then dexter dribbles one down the first base line. oh well. we did score the leadoff man, finally.
   18. phredbird Posted: September 22, 2020 at 09:45 PM (#5978147)

just hope the reds/brewers beat each others brains out.

yeah, cards have to win some games, period.

well, now i have to see if carlson is going to make the cycle!

hr is not out of the question for him I think.

Brandon "The Arsonist" Workman on for a save attempt (lol) in a 7-6 game in extras after 2 scoreless for Neris.

gets a K and then a soul-crushing 2-run tater has the Phillies a game out of a playoff slot with 4 to play. 23 H and 9 BB allowed in 13 pitiful IP for the Phils.

I still don't believe Girardi was ever dumb enough to prefer to have The Arsonist be his closer. but these days, to get a managing job you have to hand over your testicles in a jar to the GM before you sign your contract.

might be a fatal 'pen decision for what may go down as the worst bullpen in MLB history - even after FOUR relievers were acquired in trades more than 3 weeks ago.

....................

meanwhile the wounded Braves win the NL East, and the Indians are the 6th to punch a postseason ticket in the AL

My not-too-ambitious goals for the Phillies

2017: don't finish in last place (finished in last place, although they did have a winning record in September)
2018: .500 record, finish ahead of the Braves (went 80-82, after being 78-73 with 11 games left - did not finish ahead of the Braves)
2019: winning record, finish ahead of the Mets (went 81-81, after being 78-72 with 12 games to go - did not finish ahead of the Mets)
2020: be one of the *8* teams in the NL playoffs, re-sign JT Realmuto, have a bullpen ERA under 7 (we can see how this one is going)

Kepler was born and raised in Berlin, where his parents were both ballet dancers. His mom is actually from San Antonio originally, and his father from Poland. I'll let you be the judge if that counts as "really european." :)

so the Giants trail the Reds and Brewers due to weaker in-division record - I'm sure the Dodgers and Padres have nothing to do with that.

in the NFL draft order, ties are broken by who have that same crap record but did it against the crappiest teams. in fact, a head-to-head result doesn't count if two teams tie for the worst record.

Bryce Harper having a Bondsian night - 3 intentional walks and 2 homers.

It's only the third inning, and Salvador Perez has two homeruns, came into the game with a 161 ops+.... Not a poor number for a guy who is generally considered on the short list of best defensive catchers in the game. Yet only a 1.4 war...(his rfield this year is 0)
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: September 23, 2020 at 09:25 PM (#5978362)
5th innning Perez has a double, not sure where his ops+ is at right now, but he's probably taken over the AL lead tonight or came close.
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: September 23, 2020 at 10:04 PM (#5978370)
Perez's ops going into his 4th pa puts him ahead of Abreu's 1.029(al league leading ops at the start of today) going into today at 1.054.....

Strikes out drops him to 1.046.... Of course he doesn't have the requisite pa... needs 177 to qualify, at just 139 right now... just a tad shy.... (I didn't realize he had missed this many games to be honest)

Still a great season.
   35. cardsfanboy Posted: September 23, 2020 at 10:17 PM (#5978376)
Not that it matters in this game, but once agains Shildt is proven to be a piss poor tactical manager... he's the definition of the rah rah guy, but he sucks at tactics... Matheny was middle of the road on both, but working to improve, but he was also clearly a tactical genius in comparison to Shildt, who for some reason leaves his pitchers in too long, then has arguably the shortest hook with his relievers imaginable, and has no faith in the guys who are actually performing.
