HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

I hope they don't :(

The Rockies have a chance this afternoon to not just sweep the Pirates but to finish off a shutout sweep. I mean, it is the Pirates, but that's still pretty impressive.

Thinking about heading down to Los Angeles for the three-day weekend and I see that the Angels are in town and the Dodgers aren't. How'd transit access to Angels Stadium? Looks like there's a train line out there, but is that practical to get to and from LA on a Saturday night?

ETA: Nevermind, I see it doesn't run at night. Pfft.

The Royals have recalled Dick Lovelady, which seems worthy of BBTF notice.

Too bad Arrieta can’t channel some of that MAGA machismo into being a decent pitcher.
   6. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 30, 2021 at 04:32 PM (#6027063)
The Nationals score 2 1st-inning runs against the Rays without a Schwarber HR. Single, BB, 3 SB & another single.

I had no idea that no hitter would be the last good thing to happen for the Cubs this year.

Coors field scorer strikes again. Frazier committed an obvious error in the second which was called an error originally then changed to a hit

Arrieta probably has a second half like 2015 in him.

And they did it again routine ground ball booted by the third baseman scored a hit

It’s rare when you can pinpoint the end of a club’s window. Today was that day for the Cubs.

Works out perfectly for ownership. They can sell like they wanted to all along.

Trea Turner through 6 innings today:
SINGLE
DOUBLE
HOMER
TRIPLE
and 2 steals

anyone ever 'cycle' in exact order - or exact reverse order?

"Nationals shortstop Trea Turner became the fourth player to hit for three career cycles when he tripled in the sixth inning Wednesday against the Rays at Nationals Park.

The other three players to hit for the cycle three times in the Modern Era are Adrián Beltré, Babe Herman and Bob Meusel."

The exceedingly rare (possibly unique?) Birthday Cycle!

I'm glad I missed this Cubs game. I wonder how many times a team has lost a game after scoring a ton in the top of the first. Sogard's 2nd appearance on the mound of the series, practically the 2nd Ohtani. He's now up to 3.1 IP with 0 ER.

And yeah, season looks pretty much over. Sweeping the Padres at home, winning 2 of 3 in SD then no-hitting the Dodgers do seem a long time ago. The Brewers have snuck out to the biggest lead in the majors at 6 games and the Cubs are also 6 back in the WC. They could get red hot starting tomorrow but that seems unlikely with Bryant and Rizzo nursing injuries (and I assume Wisdom was hurt today). If the bullpen is falling apart, it will be an ugly 2nd half.

Let the fire sale begin!

Wiki says there have been 15 Natural Cycles (single, double, triple, HR in that order) and 10 Unnatural Cycles (in reverse order). Much more here.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: June 30, 2021 at 07:05 PM (#6027103)
per the link:

'natural' cycles in past 40 years:
BBTF mascot John Mabry 1996
Jose Valentin 2000
Brad Wilkerson 2003
Gary Matthews Jr. 2006

reverse cycles in past 40 years:
BBTF villain Luke Scott 2006
Carlos Gomez 2008
Rajai Davis 2016

a walkoff HR to complete the cycle is about as badass as it gets:
Ken Boyer 1961
Cesar Tovar 1972
George Brett 1979
Dwight Evans 1984
Carlos Gonzalez 2010
Nolan Arenado 2017

Yankees giving Aaron Judge the day off facing Ohtani. Dubious strategy unless injured.
   19. Hombre Brotani Posted: June 30, 2021 at 07:19 PM (#6027109)
I was gonna make a snarky comment about the Angels using Phil Gosselin as the clean-up hitter, but a two-run homer will shut me up good.
   20. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 30, 2021 at 07:30 PM (#6027110)
Following up on #14, Trea Turner is the only player to hit for the Birthday Cycle in MLB’s modern era. They don’t mention anyone doing it pre-1900, so it may be a matter of incomplete records.
   21. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 30, 2021 at 07:35 PM (#6027112)
BB, BB, BB, Stanton single gives the Yankees a run.

EDIT: Gleyber Torres RBI single ties the game.

EDIT II: RBI groundout gives the Yankees the lead. Ohtani at 34 pitches.

EDIT III: HBP & BB makes it 4-2, and Ohtani is out of the game after 41 pitches. His hitting leadoff backfires on Angels, too.
   22. Hombre Brotani Posted: June 30, 2021 at 07:46 PM (#6027114)
Ohtani's wild, but even when he's hitting the corners, he's not getting any calls. There's been five strikes that haven't been called, and that's really, really frustrating.

Game over for Shohei. Another long bullpen day for one of the worst bullpens in the league. Hurray.
   23. Hombre Brotani Posted: June 30, 2021 at 07:49 PM (#6027116)
Aaaand the reliever allows a bunch of runners to score. Game's over before it really starts. The Angel season in a nutshell.
   24. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 30, 2021 at 07:51 PM (#6027118)
Bases clearing double by LeMahieu gives the Yankees a 7-2 lead. Without Ohtani batting any more tonight, I’m cautiously optimistic about the Yankees chances.

From yesterday’s OmniChatter:

Hopefully Ohtani is tiring himself out hitting all these HRs & running around the bases, which might affect his pitching tomorrow.
Prescient.
   26. Howie Menckel Posted: June 30, 2021 at 08:04 PM (#6027121)
Maddon had Ohtani lead off the game - so now the pitcher's spot requires using a pinch-hitter until you run out of them.

Maddon will tell us that he knew Ohtani wouldn't get out of the first inning, so this way at least he got one AB out of him, lol.

dumb stat on YES broadcast has Ohtani being the first pitcher to bat leadoff since Cesar Tovar in 1968. but the booth knew that was an example of the incredibly dopey - and now mercifully extinct - gimmick of having a player play all nine positions in one game (which any big league player can do, as long as he doesn't get hurt and the team doesn't care if they win).

so who was the last actual pitcher (or in this case, actual pitcher/actual hitter) to bat leadoff? crickets from the booth.
   27. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: June 30, 2021 at 08:05 PM (#6027122)
FTR Ohtani's Game Score wound up at 17.
Hopefully Ohtani is tiring himself out hitting all these HRs & running around the bases, which might affect his pitching tomorrow.

Prescient.

Only if you took advantage of MLB's new E-Z access to betting. But the Angels are starting to come back, a single will cut the margin to 7-5.

   30. Howie Menckel Posted: June 30, 2021 at 08:17 PM (#6027125)
all the more reason, if so, to note that Ohtani leading off as a legit pitcher was a first in MLB history.

the blame might well be on lazy stat researchers, of course.

my quick lookitup doesn't have any pitcher ever batting first or second.
   31. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: June 30, 2021 at 08:25 PM (#6027127)
Aaron Nola continues to K-binge - 8 in 3 innings so far.
   32. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: June 30, 2021 at 08:29 PM (#6027128)
Howie, Kay and Cone made note of Tovar's special status about five seconds after they mentioned that junk stat. If only politicians would correct themselves so quickly.
   33. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 30, 2021 at 09:08 PM (#6027130)
So Cesar Tovar remains the only player to both bat leadoff as a pitcher and complete a cycle with a walk-off homer.
   34. Howie Menckel Posted: June 30, 2021 at 09:22 PM (#6027131)
Howie, Kay and Cone made note of Tovar's special status about five seconds after they mentioned that junk stat. If only politicians would correct themselves so quickly.

you're being too hard on the booth.

the note literally is true, which is fine, and they didn't pause a beat to explain the context. no correction was needed.
it's just weird that if, as we now believe, no actual pitcher has ever batted leadoff in the history of Major League Baseball (because who counts the participation-trophy Tovar game), then that's pretty cool.

I had figured that some hard-hitting pitcher from, say, the 1890s had done it and maybe repeatedly - but apparently not.
   35. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: June 30, 2021 at 09:23 PM (#6027132)
Nola gives 4 hits in a row in the fifth to allow the Marlins to tie the game 5-5. The first three were pure bloops; the fourth was a line drive. Nola leaves game with 11 Ks in 4.2 innings.

Phils bring in reclamation project Neftali Felix, he of the 40.50 ERA.
   36. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: June 30, 2021 at 09:28 PM (#6027134)
Felix allows hits to first two batters, bringing in 2 inherited runners and boosting his own ERA to 54.00

And the inning ends with a mercy third strike call.

Felix ERA down to 36.00

Mets TV booth is rated as one of the best in basically all surveys - but they raise it to another level in blowouts.

it's 13-2 in the 6th inning, so we haven't gotten to the "open a random old pack of baseball cards" segment and let everybody riff on some of the players on the cards.

but Ron Darling just told Gary Cohen a story that he said happened in Philly about 10 years ago.

Darling said he and Keith Hernandez "had our glass of wine" in the hotel bar after a game and were headed back to their rooms.

two fans also get in the elevator - in full baseball uniforms, as if they had just gone 2 for 5 or tossed a scoreless inning.

per Darling, Keith just looks as these two fellows and says disdainfully, "How OLD are you guys?"

Darling speculates around 50 - and then Cohen speculates that this is a story that these guys each no doubt have told hundreds of times.

good stuff. but then Darling says, "there's more to this story."

"right away the elevator stops - on Keith's floor, of course. now I'm stuck in the elevator with these two guys. they look at each other, and one says, 'That was AWESOME!"

so yet another good call by Cohen.

I came across Darling in a bar in Chicago 35 years ago and..... it's a good story. I'll tell it at BBTF softball if anyone wants to hear it.
:)
   39. Howie Menckel Posted: June 30, 2021 at 10:28 PM (#6027140)
and here come the Topps cards in the Mets booth.

four cards that Ron and Gary are asked to guess are Bobby Valentine, Jose Cruz, Ken Oberkfell, and Joe Torre.

this was so-so, and as the inning ends Darling says, "that's one of the worst segments we have had."
:)

it's 14-2, bases loaded no out in the bottom of the 8th, and Almora is on for the Mets.

he hits like a pitcher - 3 for 39 this season - so there's that.

but after a 4-pitch walk, Darling concludes, "I don't think he's ever done this before" - meaning, throw a pitch off a mound.

UPDATE: the ump handed out a charity strike. then a walk.

Mets historian Cohen gives us the best and worst position players ever to pitch for the team.

BEST: Desi Relaford, who he said could throw 92-93 mph and hit a corner. (a 1-2-3 scoreless inning with a K in 2001 but never got another chance).

WORST: Jose Reyes.

that may change tonight, after yet another walk by Almora, an RBI groundout where Almora somehow covers the first base bag like a real pitcher, and a 3-run GARBAGE TIME HR by Albies to make it 20-2 and there's still one only one out.
   40. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: June 30, 2021 at 10:42 PM (#6027144)

I turned off the Mets game when it was 7-2. This offense ain't coming back from that.

Just checked back in and it's 20-2.
   41. Howie Menckel Posted: June 30, 2021 at 11:00 PM (#6027145)
to amplify an earlier post, I flipped to Yankees - rain-delayed in the 5th - just now and caught a piece of the interview with the 70-year-old lady who applied to be a bat boy 60 years ago and got a letter back saying basically "that was no place for a girl."

well, she was a bat boy today - and her unbridled joy was something to see.

had that "Cocoon" vibe - she seemed like she was 10 years old again.

the interview, like everything else about the day, was overwhelming for her.

she said she fist-bumped many players, and she can't believe that they were thanking her for her support instead of the other way around. one questioner was announced as whomever "from the New York Times" - and she was flummoxed and thrilled all at once.

worth looking for, if you just need a smile.

The discussion about Ohtani batting leadoff reminded me of how Earl Weaver used to list a pitcher (usually the previous day's starter, IIRC)
as the DH. He did this to keep the L/R options open, in case the opposition starter got knocked out of the game. In one case, the listed DH wasn't even in the same city. MLB changed the rule in the offseason

Good description in this article:

"How Earl Weaver changed the DH rule"
