Nelson Cruz will never stop homering.

Looks like almost everyone is going maskless at the full house Texas Rangers game today.

Wheeee!

Whit Merrifield is a machine.

Too bad Nelson Crus has the steroid stain. The guy is remarkable.
   6. shoelesjoe Posted: April 05, 2021 at 05:28 PM (#6011779)
Nelson Cruz’s first four ABs today were:

Screaming line drive that almost killed the 3rd baseman, caught for an out.
Grand slam to left-center (after almost hitting the LF fair pole earlier in the AB)
450 foot bomb to straight away left
Double down the LF line

I’m guessing that if Cruz were left-handed opposing teams would have an extreme shift in place whenever he came to the plate, but because he’s right-handed it’s not even on their radar.

The Mets won a World Series before they ever won on Opening Day.

that 0-8 mark ended in 1970 - kicking off a 39-12 record on Opening Day that defies all reason, and bestrides all other MLB team's Opening Day records like a Colussus.

tonight - the Mets' COVID/Nats-delayed season opener - it's:
deGrom 150 ERA+ in 1170 IP
vs
Mike Moore 91 ERA in 895 IP

Moore was last useful in 2017, with a 98 ERA+ in 198 IP for the Rays and Giants.
he was good but not great with the Rays in 2012-13 in 328 IP with a 107 ERA+ and a 28-15 record - before deGrom had even reached the majors.

so the Mets - I'm saying there's a chance.

you'd have to bet $225 on the Mets to win $100 (meaning if you win, you get your $225 back plus a $100 profit).

kicking off a 39-12 record on Opening Day
And one of the losses (2005?) was a horrible Braden Looper blown save after one of the times Kaz Matsui homered on opening day.

Cardinals just had an 8-batter inning in which they scored three runs... and only two balls were put in play.

OK Red Sox here we go!! Today is a new day!

Replay should die just to kill the aesthetic of players being called out and then just staying on the field.
   12. salvomania Posted: April 05, 2021 at 07:21 PM (#6011797)
According to GameDay, deGrom threw six pitches to Harper, 5 were strikes, yet somehow Harper drew a walk.
   13. Howie Menckel Posted: April 05, 2021 at 07:30 PM (#6011798)
Moore whiffed Lindor on a pitch that never sniffed the plate. maybe a wildcat protest backing a certain litigious umpire?

Hoskins rips a ball to deep CF, hustles to just past first base - then slows his roll for a moment as he fist-pumps for what he believes is a HR. then returns to fifth gear - and is thrown out a third base by inches.

guilty of bad baserunning, but a judge will sentence him to the minimum. I mean, he crushed this ball and it missed being a HR by inches, plus he nearly made it to third safely anyway.

not all crimes deserve a maximum sentence.

good graphic in Mets game is "Most HR by a player in his first two MLB seasons"
DiMaggio 75
Kiner 74
Matthews 72
Pujols 71
Braun 72
ALONSO 69

games played in those seasons:
DiMaggio 308
Kiner 308
Mathews 308
Pujols 324
Braun 324
ALONSO..... 222

Aaron Judge gavels a HR to right, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead over the Orioles.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: April 05, 2021 at 07:40 PM (#6011803)
deGrom - whose average fastball velocity terrifying increased in each of the last 4 seasons and reached over 98 mph last year - is tossing one 100 to 101 mph beebee after another in the early going tonight.

what the hell will he do in the midseason heat?
   18. Howie Menckel Posted: April 05, 2021 at 07:41 PM (#6011804)
Mike Moore hasn't been useful since he won 17 games for the A's in 1992.

heh. but Matt Moore apparently had a strong season in Japan last year and looks dazzling through 2 innings of his Phillies debut.

Lindor snags a grounder up the middle and deftly kicks off a 6-4-3 double play.
the Mets have not been enamored of defensive stars in recent years, but who knows - it could work.

"Most HR by a player in his first two MLB seasons"
A somewhat misleading, or incomplete, list, since it eliminates those with late season ‘cup of coffee’ call-ups before their rookie season, such as Aaron Judge, who had 79 HRs in his rookie & 2nd-full-year seasons, in but 267 games.

Ah yes, the deGrom special. He's been dining on those for years.

Aaron Judge, who had 79 HRs in his rookie & 2nd-full-year seasons, in but 267 games.

as opposed to Alonso's 69 in but 218 games.

that sleight-of-hand deftly dodges Judge missing 67 games in his first 2 full seasons (Alonso missed 4).
yet in spite of that, Alonso's rate is clearly better anyway - without even using the word "bandbox."

btw, Moore looks like George Clooney's slightly-less handsome nephew.

which "will play in any ballpark," as they say - though of course I would defer to bbc's expertise on such matters.

Ryan Howard had 80 in 247 games, by your criteria.

The Mets got deGrom a run. Now if he doesn't win, it's his own damn fault.

I was at a game a couple of years ago, 0-0 of course in the 6th or 7th, and deGrom at the plate.

so he hit a HR himself to gain the damn lead. such a badass

and tonight he's 2 for 2 with an RBI !

Ryan Howard had 80 in 247 games, by your criteria.
And Mark McGwire had 81 HRs in his 1st two full season. Might be others who did better than those on the list that counted cup of coffee call-ups, which was my only point.

Of course the Mets only have 2 runs in a deGrom start, and one of those runs was driven in by deGrom himself.

I missed baseball so much.

   32. Howie Menckel Posted: April 05, 2021 at 08:42 PM (#6011821)
Judge's "cup of coffee" was 95 PA in 27 G in 2016.

I know he's a tall man, but that's a lot of coffee. he only averaged 123 G in 2017-19, and the equivalent of 78 G last year. so 2016 rates as a quarter-season for Judge.
   33. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 05, 2021 at 08:49 PM (#6011822)
Jordan Montgomery done after 6 scoreless innings, just 4 hits, all singles, 7 K & 0 BB, on 73 pitches. Thought he might be the weak link in the Yankees rotation, but certainly not tonight.

yeah. never could get into it last season (too many external stressors keeping my attention plus the lack of uncertainty if the season would be completed) but this year, it's the same as it ever was.

For the first 4 innings, Jacob deGrom's FB velocity averaged 99.5 MPH, topping out at 102 MPH.

He is throwing faster than ever.

Mets' booth is in midseason form already.

Gary Cohen notes that the wife of owner Steve Cohen (no relation, which is not a necessary note if you are from the NYC region) grew up in the same town in Puerto Rico as Lindor did. Steve Cohen said that there is a lot of Spanish spoken in the house by his wife to others, and he never knows if she is speaking about him.

Gary Cohen says that his parents spoke Yiddish, and that when they did at home he could tell when the talking was about him. Ivy Leaguer Ron Darling chimes in that his parents spoke a variety of languages, so same deal.

then they ask Keith Hernandez, and deadpans, "No."

there is a long-running bit about Keith, whose ancestors are from Spain. but he doesn't speak or understand any more Spanish than anyone else who lives in a melting-pot city - so a little.

his nickname was "Mex" for the moustache, though, and anytime he goes anywhere in NYC, fans come up to him and speak to him in Spanish.

I mean, the guy's name is Hernandez - so Keith doesn't blame them. but it's still hilarious.

Keith then adds that is maternal grandparents didn't speak English. Cohen wonders if they talked about him in Spanish.

"Maybe Grandpa," says Keith, "he didn't like us."

As long as someone in the lineup is getting it done, I don't care where they bat.

Pivetta was getting it done for 5 IP. Andriese now in. Took him 5 pitches to break 90 MPH.
   39. villageidiom Posted: April 05, 2021 at 09:09 PM (#6011830)
And it took him 3 batters to allow as many hits as Pivetta gave up in 5 innings.

The Mets are lifting deGrom after only 77 pitches despite the fact that he has breezed through the last 2 innings. I disagree with this a lot. A LOT.

Will the Met bullpen blow it right away or will they wait until 9th inning? It'll be interesting to see this.

deGrom seemed cool with it in the dugout.

if I'm managing him, I follow his direction.

one of the most level-headed athletes I have ever seen.

he used to almost seem a little frustrated by his teammates stiffing him out of ONE WIN AFTER ANOTHER, but it lessened and then disappeared long before he came close to ripping them. it feels kind of Zen-like now.

"Grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference."

Mets are skipping 5th man Lucchesi to keep deGrom on regular rest for his next start.
again, I ask Jake what he wants to do.

you'd have to bet $225 on the Mets to win $100 (meaning if you win, you get your $225 back plus a $100 profit).

So we're going to lose, you mean.

yes

the lack of run support is extreme and better known, but deGrom still has 70 career wins - and now 31 times the bullpen has blown a lead and cost him a win.

May and Loup debuts - ugh. "Defensive Replacement" Guillorme at 3rd was worst of all, though. 2-2 game, bags loaded, one out and you get a grounder to keep the game tied. but you get greedy and want the DP, so you throw a 100 mph fastball that C McCann can't handle, so it's 4-2 and a sac fly makes it 5-2.

so interesting that Keith Hernandez - one of the greatest defensive infielders in baseball history - showed us after the break that C McCann "committed too soon" with his footwork on the play, so he couldn't handle a shaky throw. they even showed Keith in the booth demonstrating good and bad footwork.
