Seattle Mariners players feel ‘betrayed’ after Kendall Graveman traded to Astros, per report

The Seattle Mariners completed an exhilarating comeback to erase a 6-0, first-inning deficit and beat the AL West rival Houston Astros (SEA 11, HOU 8) on Monday night. It was the thrilling game for a Mariners team that has far exceeded expectations.

Less than 24 hours later, the clubhouse was enraged. The Mariners on Tuesday not only traded away ace reliever Kendall Graveman, who struck out two in a scoreless inning Monday, but they traded him to the Astros in a four-player swap. Graveman has been lights out all season (three earned runs in 33 innings) and now he’ll help Houston as it tries to win the division crown.

“(This) is a move we feel makes us a deeper team today, as well as moving forward,” GM Jerry Dipoto said in a statement. ...

Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg to undergo surgery, out for season

Stephen Strasburg’s season is over.

The Washington Nationals’ starter hasn’t pitched since June 1 due to a nerve issue in his neck. Nationals manager Dave Martinez told reporters Tuesday that Strasburg will have surgery on Wednesday, ending his season.

Martinez said the diagnosis for Strasburg is neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, per Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post.

Strasburg has been on the injured list for nearly two months but threw a bullpen session last week in an effort to return to the mound. However, the 33-year-old righty was still dealing with discomfort in his neck. It wasn’t the first setback for Strasburg during the recovery process.

Everything you need to know about Olympic baseball rosters

United States: Manager Mike Scioscia rolls out a team that combines big league veterans like Todd Frazier, Scott Kazmir, Edwin Jackson and David Robertson with prospects like Oakland A’s shortstop Nick Allen, Boston Red Sox first baseman Tristan Casas, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson, Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Shane Baz and new Minnesota Twins pitcher Joe Ryan. Frazier has become the de facto team captain, and while he and Kazmir appeared in the majors this season, the younger guys are the players to watch. Baz might be the pitcher you want to start against Japan, as he has a 2.26 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A, with 82 strikeouts in 55.2 innings. Ryan, just traded from the Rays to the Twins, is also in Triple-A, where he ...

Phils agree to Tyler Anderson deal

The Phillies are getting some badly needed starting pitching help before Friday’s Trade Deadline.

Multiple sources told MLB.com on Tuesday afternoon that the Phillies have agreed to a trade for Pirates left-hander Tyler Anderson, who is 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA in 18 starts. Pittsburgh is set to acquire right-hander Cristian Hernandez, who is the Phillies’ No. 29-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, and catcher Abrahan Gutierrez. Both are Low-A players.

The teams haven’t confirmed a deal, which is pending physicals.

Anderson, who has pitched five or more innings in each of his 18 starts this season, was scheduled to start Tuesday night for the Pirates, but he was scratched, Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton told reporters.

Mets’ agreement with Kumar Rocker suddenly in jeopardy

The Mets’ agreement with their first-round draft pick Kumar Rocker is in limbo after the team expressed concerns with the right-hander’s pitching elbow during his physical examination, multiple industry sources told The Post.

Rocker’s camp disagrees with those concerns, citing the pitcher’s durability at Vanderbilt, leading to a stalemate as Sunday’s 5 p.m. signing deadline approaches.

Rocker, whom the Mets drafted 10th overall, had agreed to a $6 million signing bonus on draft day pending the physical. The two sides could either sign off on a smaller figure, part ways altogether, or move forward with the original deal if the Mets determine that he’s worth the risk.

If an agreement can’t be reached, Rocker could return to ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-27-2021

Toledo News-Bee, July 27, 1921:

George Gibson, Pittsburg manager, has a substitute shortstop in the background in case anything should go wrong with Rabbit Maranville. The sub is Harold (Pie) Traynor, farmed to Birmingham. In 70 games the kid has hit .360, stole 40 bases and is a whirlwind fielder.

That’s a fairly handy spare infielder to have hanging around. Any time of the season was a good time for Pie.

The New York Yankees, facing some important decisions with Friday’s trade deadline looming, on Monday acquired right-handed reliever Clay Holmes from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league infielders Diego Castillo and Hoy Park.

Holmes, 28, is 3-2 in 44 relief appearances with 44 strikeouts and 35 walks in 42 innings. He has held right-handed batters to a .173 average (17-for-98). Holmes is 5-7 with a 5.57 ERA over 91 games, including four starts, in four major league seasons.

Park, 25, appeared in one major league game, on July 16 against Boston. He is batting .307 with 10 doubles, 11 homers and 32 RBIs for Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

A’s near deal for Cubs lefty Chafin

With a clear need for relief help, the A’s are set to add a strong bullpen reinforcement with left-hander Andrew Chafin in a deal with the Cubs, a source told MLB.com on Monday. Neither club has confirmed the deal.

The return from Oakland is unclear at this point, though MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal reported that outfielder Greg Deichmann, ranked by MLB Pipeline as Oakland’s No. 9 prospect, is one of two players going to Chicago in exchange for Chafin, whose contract includes a $5.25 million mutual option for 2022 with a $500,000 buyout.

Chafin, 31, has emerged as one of the top left-handed relievers in baseball this season. In 43 appearances with the Cubs, he’s posted a 2.06 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 12 walks across 39 1/3 ...

Hideo Nomo Paved The Way For A Generation Of Damn Good Japanese Ballplayers

According to JAWS, Nomo barely ranks among the top 500 starting pitchers in MLB history, and Hall of Fame voters signaled their agreement when they let him drop off the ballot after just one appearance, with only 1.1 percent of ballots carrying his name. But that sells short the enormous impact Nomo has had on baseball, which continues to this day. Not only was he one of the game’s most electrifying and imitated pitchers during his heyday, but he opened the door for other Japanese players to arrive in the U.S. and play for MLB teams. The modern posting system — which has been the pathway to America for Japanese stars such as Ichiro Suzuki, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Yu Darvish, Masahiro Tanaka and, yes, the great Shohei Ohtani — was ...

Padres Discussing Eric Hosmer Trades

Eric Hosmer “has surfaced in recent trade discussions,” according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The motivation for such discussions seems to be at least partly connected to the Padres’ luxury tax situation, as Rosenthal notes,”The most recent calculation, provided by MLB around the All-Star break, has the Padres over the CBT threshold by roughly $2 million.”  On a related note, the Padres had the Pirates pick up much of the tab for recent acquisition Adam Frazier.

After going 71-91 in the 2017 season, the Padres signed Hosmer to a huge eight-year, $144MM deal, sending a signal they were ready to compete. Since that time, the Padres have only gotten more aggressive, handing out even bigger contracts to Manny Machado and ...

Majority of Dodgers players do not want Trevor Bauer to rejoin team, per report

It’s unclear when Bauer will be able to return to baseball—a suspension under MLB’s domestic violence policy looms in addition to potential criminal charges—but, when he is, he may not be welcome in his own clubhouse. Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times says many Dodgers players do not want Bauer back. From DiGiovanna:

Bauer’s career is in jeopardy, and his stay with the Dodgers could be over, the sexual-assault allegations having turned a pitcher in his prime into a pariah in his own clubhouse, where no teammate has spoken publicly about him or come to his defense. Two people with knowledge of Dodgers clubhouse dynamics, who are unauthorized to speak publicly about the situation, said that a majority of players do not want Bauer ...

MLB will try encrypted transmitters and bone conduction to stop sign stealing

But soon the MLB may try fighting fire with fire: on August 3rd, it plans to begin testing an encrypted wireless communication device that replaces the traditional flash of fingers with button taps, according to ESPN.

The device, from a startup called PitchCom, will be tested in the Low-A West minor league first. As you’d expect from something that’s relaying extremely basic signals, it’s not a particularly complicated piece of kit: one wristband transmitter for the catcher with nine buttons to signal “desired pitch and location,” which sends an encrypted audio signal to receivers that can squeeze into a pitcher’s cap and a catcher’s helmet.

The receivers use bone-conduction technology, so they don’t necessarily need to ...

Rays Trade Rich Hill To Mets

The Mets, in dire need of some rotation help, have found some of the rotation depth they’ve been seeking. The team announced Friday that it has acquired lefty Rich Hill from the Rays in exchange for minor league catcher/infielder Matt Dyer and veteran right-hander Tommy Hunter (who is currently on the injured list). Right-hander Robert Stock, out with a hamstring strain, was transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to open a spot on the Mets’ 40-man roster.

The swap will come as a surprise to many, given the Rays’ place in the standings and last night’s acquisition of Nelson Cruz, but it serves as another reminder that in today’s game, many clubs can’t be simply boxed into strict “buyer” or “seller” categories. ...Read More...

The inside story of how Cleveland Indians became Cleveland Guardians

As they talked to fans and civic leaders about a possible new name, they first asked what people think when they hear the word “Cleveland.”

“We heard things like loyalty, pride and resiliency in being from Cleveland,” said Barren. “They’re protective of our city. They’re protective of the land and everything about it. Those all became part of what Guardians really started to evoke from an emotional standpoint.”

They wrote down these words: Pride. Resiliency. Loyalty. Protective.

“We asked which of these potential brands reflect those attributes to what the fans (say) are important,” said Barren.

That knocked out animals and colors. It left objects/characters.

THE BRANDING ISSUES

There were some people pushing for ...

Twins, Byron Buxton Unable To Reach Extension

The Twins and franchise cornerstone Byron Buxton have been unable to come to terms on a contract extension, increasing the likelihood of a full-scale sell-off before Friday’s trade deadline. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Dan Hayes report that the Twins’ initial offer was for $73MM over seven years with an unspecified number of incentives. The Twins “increased the guarantee slightly,” but not enough to come to a long-term agreement. The final guarantee increased to $80MM, tweets The Athletic.

The end result here is not surprising, given the muddled valuation process for a talent like Buxton. When he’s at his best, he’s one of the best players in the game, a five-tool player capable of anchoring a first-division lineup on ...

Boston Red Sox end Domingo German’s no-hit bid in 8th inning, storm back to beat New York Yankees

Domingo German was simply dominating the Boston Red Sox. Never more so than in the seventh inning, when the New York Yankees right-hander struck out stars J.D. Martinez, Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts and rookie Jarren Duran.

As German walked off the mound then with a no-hitter intact and a solid lead, there was no way to envision what was on deck.

Held hitless into the eighth by German and looking feeble, Alex Verdugo and the Red Sox suddenly erupted for five runs to shake Fenway Park and storm past New York 5-4 on Sunday.

The old ballpark was almost silent all afternoon, until Verdugo opened the eighth with a long double for Boston’s first hit, and he raised his arms in celebration at second base.

By the time Kike Hernandez slid home ...

San Diego Padres acquire All-Star second baseman Adam Frazier from Pittsburgh Pirates, sources say

The San Diego Padres are acquiring second baseman Adam Frazier from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources told ESPN.

Frazier, 29, who leads baseball in hits this year, is not a free agent until after the 2022 season.

In exchange, the Pirates are acquiring right-hander Michell Miliano, shortstop Tucupita Marcano and outfielder Jack Suwinski, a source told ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel.

Frazier entered Sunday hitting .327—the second-best average in Major League Baseball—with four home runs and 32 RBIs.

A 2020 Gold Glove finalist and an All-Star this season, Frazier was the Pirates’ second-longest tenured player, behind right fielder Gregory Polanco.

Mr. Seys identified Louis Levi, of Kokomo, Ind., and Des Moines, Ia., a defendant, as one of the bettors. Seys said he and Clark Griffith, manager of the Washington baseball team, held stakes for bets made by Abe Attell and Levi.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen any allegations that Griffith was involved, even unwittingly.

His parents didn’t nickname him Double Duty. New York baseball columnist Damon Runyon did. Why?

During a 1932 doubleheader that pitted Radcliffe’s Pittsburgh Crawfords against the New York Black Yankees at Yankee Stadium, Runyon witnessed Radcliffe hit a grand slam and catch Satchel Paige’s shutout in the twi-night opener, only to turn around and throw a shutout of his own in the second game. ...

Mantle was nearing the end of his Hall of Fame career when he smacked a pitch from Stu Miller of the Baltimore Orioles into the right-field bleachers at old Yankee Stadium in May 1967. The lawsuit says Mantle wanted to use a lighter bat than his signature model in order to generate bat speed, and Pepitone obliged after hitting a home run the previous inning.
