Justin Verlander goes winless yet again, now has worst ERA in Fall Classic history

The Astros went scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, ensuring Verlander would have to wait for his first career win in the World Series.

Verlander has now appeared in five different World Series, making eight total starts. The results have been ugly: an 0-6 record and 6.07 ERA, the worst mark in the history of the Fall Classics (min. 30 innings pitched).

He has been even worse in Game 1s, holding a 10.29 ERA when opening the World Series, according to ESPN.

The Astros were clearly hoping for something different from Verlander, who was among the best stories in baseball this year by posting a 1.75 ERA in 175 innings with 220 strikeouts. One of the best pitchers of his generation, Verlander’s World Series troubles have spanned 16 years ...

That time Bo Jackson tried to kill Kevin Seitzer

Dating back to his boyhood in Bessemer, Alabama, Jackson’s philosophy on dishing out an ass-kicking was fairly simple: If anyone steps in to end the ass-kicking, the ass-kicking intensifies. As several of the coaches and players tried separating the combatants, Jackson’s grip grew vise-like.

“Bo!” screamed Bob Schaefer, the first-base coach. “Bo! Bo! Let him go! Bo!”

Jackson wasn’t listening. He was overcome by rage. Too much Kevin Seitzer. His arms, Schaefer recalled, seemed to be growing in thickness by the second. The veins bulged from his left bicep.

“The harder I squeezed, his eyes rolled back in his head,” Jackson said. “And the harder they pulled on me, the stiffer my arm got.”

By now Seitzer’s feet were ...

MLB cancels exhibition games in S. Korea over ‘contractual issues’

Major League Baseball (MLB) has canceled four exhibition games scheduled for November in South Korea, citing “contractual issues” with a local promoter.

MLB made the announcement while Game 1 of the World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Houston Astros was under way in Houston on Friday (local time).

The MLB World Tour Korea Series was to have featured two games in the southeastern city of Busan on Nov. 11 and 12 and two more in Seoul on Nov. 14 and 15. A team of MLB players, including a few South Korean-born players such as Kim Ha-seong of the San Diego Padres and former World Series MVP Salvador Perez, was set to take on Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) players in what would have been MLB’s first games here in 100 ...

Here’s a rundown of Silver Slugger finalists

The finalists for the American and National League Silver Slugger Awards—honoring the top offensive players at each position—were announced Thursday by Louisville Slugger. The winners will be revealed on Thursday, Nov. 10, during a one-hour show on MLB Network, which begins at 6 p.m. ET.

MLB managers and coaches vote for the Silver Sluggers, which go to one player apiece in each league at catcher, DH and each infield position, plus three outfielders. Like the Gold Glove Awards, the Silver Sluggers also added a utility category in 2022.

Brock Holt Announces Retirement

Utility-man Brock Holt has announced his retirement from the game after ten years in the major leagues in a post on Instagram. Holt spent seven seasons with the Red Sox, but also had stints with the Pirates, Brewers, Nationals and Rangers during his career. He retires with a career .262/.332/.362 slash line and 25 home runs across 751 games.

“Today I hang them up knowing I did the best I could for me, my family, and my teammates. I’m proud of every single second of it.” Holt wrote.

Drafted in the ninth-round of the 2009 draft by the Pirates, Holt made his MLB debut in Pittsburgh in 2012. He appeared in a handful of games that year before the Pirates shipped him and closer Joel Hanrahan to the Red Sox in the Mark Melancon deal. In ...

How World Series day games went extinct

So the following year, MLB expanded to two night World Series games — both on weeknights — but it sparked a backlash. As the Associated Press wrote a month after the 1972 World Series: “‘Television is calling the shots,’ argued some critics. ‘Baseball has sold its soul to the tube.’”

Kuhn pushed back on that narrative, telling the AP that he was “deeply disturbed at insinuations that baseball now jumps to the whip of television interests and that we have surrendered control of baseball.”

On the contrary, Kuhn said, it was baseball, not the networks, that had pushed for night games.

“I broached the subject to NBC,” Kuhn recalled. “They were skeptical and resistant. The World Series comes in the first 13 weeks of ...

Can this World Series match the madness of the 1980 Phillies-Astros NLCS?

“That to me, it was probably one of the greatest playoffs ever,” then-Phillies shortstop Larry Bowa said recently on MLB Network….

Then came Game 4—one of the weirdest and wildest contests in postseason history.

There were five double plays turned—four started by an outfielder. There was a sacrifice fly that was then taken off the board when the Phillies appealed that the Astros’ Luis Pujols had left third base early. A fourth-inning triple play was even changed into a double play following a 20-minute argument among the umpires that led to both teams protesting the game.

Despite it all, when Philadelphia came up to hit in the eighth inning, the Astros held a 2-0 lead and were just six outs away from the World Series. The Phillies then ...

Bryce Harper an Astro? Deadline trade in 2018 almost happened

Four years ago, the Astros agreed in principle to acquire Harper from the Nationals a day before the July 31 deadline, former general manager Jeff Luhnow said this week. The five-player package headed to Washington included infielders Abraham Toro and Randy César along with pitchers Josh James, J.B. Bukauskas and Kent Emanuel, Luhnow said. ...

A need for offense became apparent, but as Luhnow remembered it, he and Rizzo opened dialogue on July 30 discussing bullpens. The two executives first discussed another player — Luhnow believes it was reliever Kelvin Herrera — before Luhnow mentioned Harper “sort of in jest.”

According to Luhnow, Rizzo responded that “for the right package,” Washington would move its franchise ...

David Stearns steps down as Brewers’ president of baseball ops

David Stearns is stepping down as the Brewers’ president of baseball operations but will remain with the organization in an advisory role to owner Mark Attanasio, the team announced Thursday.

Matt Arnold, who has been the Brewers’ senior vice president and general manager since 2020, will take over the lead role in overseeing baseball operations.

Stearns had led the Brewers’ baseball operations during arguably the franchise’s greatest run of sustained success. He joined the Brewers in October 2015 as general manager and was named president of baseball operations before the 2019 season.

The risk, reward of paying a player like Rafael Devers

From a business perspective, Devers’ presence at Fenway Park would duplicate the kind of following Harper represents at Citizens Bank Park. Shirts. Tickets. Buzz. That all factors into any financial commmitment.

There is also optimism that the other nine players participating with Devers every night throughout the meat and potatoes of what figures to be a long-term relationship….

“Right now on Raffy, we are in a different position as an organization where I think our talent base — the young talent in the organization — is in a much better spot, and we are not committed in the same way financially to as many players as we were (heading into 2020),” Bloom said. “So, I can’t give a guarantee still based on that, obviously, but part ...

Lanky and seemingly equal parts ears, teeth, cowboy boots and charisma, McIngvale has been a household name in Houston for decades thanks to his wacky TV commercials and his Ross Perot delivery. “I just have what you might call a high tolerance for risk,” McIngvale says. “Damon Runyon said ‘All horse players die broke.’ And I know I shouldn’t bet with my heart, but it’s hard not to and it’s a lot more fun.” In 2017, McIngvale gained national attention for opening his doors and sheltering hundreds of victims of Hurricane Harvey for weeks inside his furniture showroom, something he also did after Hurricane Katrina years prior. After the storm, as the Astros continued their historic run to the 2017 World Series, McIngvale was in the news yet ...

Hitting coach Jeff Albert, pitching coach Mike Maddux won’t be back for Cardinals in 2023

Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak announced on Wednesday that hitting coach Jeff Albert, pitching coach Mike Maddux and bullpen coach Brian Eversgerd will not return for the 2023 season.

Mozeliak said that the team was prepared to offer Albert a new contract, but he informed them of his desire to move on from the position. Mozeliak also said that Maddix was not fired or retiring, and that he decided to step down.

Maddux had been with the Cardinals since 2018, with Albert joining in 2019.

Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright: Intends to play in 2023

Wainwright informed the Cardinals on Wednesday that he intends to return to the team for another season in 2023, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

After being rumored to be set for retirement following the 2022 campaign, Wainwright looks poised to stick around for his 18th season in St. Louis. He’s scheduled for free agency this winter, but the two sides are likely to come to terms quickly on a new deal. The right-hander struggled down the stretch during the 2022 season, but he produced a solid 3.71 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 143 strikeouts over 191.2 frames in 32 starts.

Yankees Expected to Retain Aaron Boone, Brian Cashman, per Report

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and team manager Aaron Boone are expected to be brought back to the organization next season, SNY reports.

Cashman has been with the organization since 1986 when he began as an intern. He’s worked as the general manager and senior vice president since ’98. His contract is up now that the Yankees’ season is officially over.

According to SNY’s report, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner is expected to bring Cashman back, meaning team manager Boone will most likely return as well.

Boone just finished the first year of his three-year deal though he has managed the team since 2018. He took the team to the ALCS this year before the Yankees were swept by the Astros.

Heyman: Time for Hal Steinbrenner to open Yankees’ coffers — and here’s how

Re-sign Aaron Judge. Without him, this was a .500 team, and a dull one. That $30.5 million a year offer seemed reasonable back in spring. But now even $40 million is light, even after falling down in the postseason. “That’s gone,” Astros exec Reggie Jackson said. We’ll say $45 million per. No reason the legit home run record holder shouldn’t be the game’s highest-paid player.

Sign Justin Verlander (or Carlos Rodon if Verlander insists on remaining an Astro). The Yankees last year tried for Verlander at $25 million, which is ultimately what he’ll get in Houston once he opts out. He’d serve two purposes: recreate the one-two punch he had with ace Gerrit Cole in Houston, and hurt the Astros, a necessity now. If he won’t ...

Could Betts move to 2B if LA signs Judge?

According to sources, the Dodgers could become serious players in this offseason’s Aaron Judge sweepstakes, a move that would potentially result in a position change for Betts, a six-time All-Star outfielder.

Should the Dodgers decide to let the likes of Trea Turner, Justin Turner (club option), Craig Kimbrel and Joey Gallo (among others), leave as free agents, they could have roughly $100 million coming off the payroll, giving them ample space to make a bid for Judge.

Judge started 74 games in center field, 54 in right field and 25 as a designated hitter this season, but he has spent the vast majority of his time in the Majors playing right field. While Judge—who turns 31 in April—could potentially take over in center field and play ...

On The Whole Dombrowski Situation

I know that last part because, well, Dombrowski is in Philadelphia now. But I also know that last part because that’s the exact road he’s continued down since taking over the Phillies. In his three years since taking over the team, Dombrowski has given out the following contracts:

Kyle Gibson (34 years old when he signed): 3 years, $28 million

Kyle Schwarber (29): four years, $79 million

Zack Wheeler (30): 5 years, $118 million

Nick Castellanos (30): 5 years, $100 million

JT Realmuto (30): 5 years, $115 million

Noah Syndergaard (30): 1 years, $21 million

That’s five contracts of three years or more, all for players in their 30s. That’s about $450 million in total dollars. That’s in just three years….

Right now the ...

Inside the Dodgers’ collapse: Why baseball’s winningest team isn’t in the World Series

And of all the things that doomed the Dodgers to another October faceplant this year, situational hitting — specifically, a five for 34 mark (.147 average) with runners in scoring position — tripped them up most once again.

“If you were to boil it down to its simplest form, in the regular season, we led baseball in every statistical category with runners in scoring position,” Friedman said. “In the series, we were not good.”

Sometimes, the problem appeared to be with their approach.

In the third inning of a 2-1 loss in Game 3, for example, the Dodgers stranded two on base after Betts chased a 3-and-1 fastball out of the zone for a lineout, and Trea Turner whiffed on two curveballs in the dirt before taking a called third ...

Padres manager Bob Melvin defends Trent Grisham’s ninth-inning bunt in NLCS loss to Phillies

Viewers were perplexed as the sequence unfolded with Grisham seemingly giving himself up rather than the Padres having two outs to play with and the go-ahead run on base.

Melvin explained after the game that Grisham was bunting for a hit.

“Grass is wet. Tough lefty on the mound… I talked to him before it,” Melvin said. “First baseman’s back, drag it over there and we’ve got a chance, with a righty up behind him, to potentially knock in the go-ahead run too. So I think it’s a decent play for sure.”

Grisham, who hit .184 in the regular season, played hero for the Padres in the first two rounds of the postseason, batting .381 with three home runs and five RBI in seven games against the 101-win Mets and 111-win Dodgers. He went 0-for-18 ...

When Jim Thorpe Almost Became a Pittsburgh Pirate

When the AAU rejected Thorpe’s appeal, forfeited his amateur standing, and demanded the return of his gold medals, the attention shifted to his future in professional baseball.  He’d promised Barney Dreyfuss that he would sign with the Pirates, but that didn’t prevent other teams, including the New York Giants, from pursuing Thorpe.  Under John McGraw, the Giants had won the National League pennant the last two years and saw a great drawing card in Thorpe as they pursued their third straight pennant.  McGraw’s Giants made Thorpe his best offer.

It seemed unlikely that Dreyfuss would release Thorpe from his promise so he could sign with the Giants.  Since the Pirates won the World Series in 1909, the Giants, along with the Cubs, ...

MLB regular-season excellence has become an afterthought. Let’s fix that.

The obvious solution is for the top four finishers qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

The playoffs are designed to create a World Series champion and manufacture drama. It’s great for TV. Teams performing well in this tournament should be rewarded. But the regular season is a different animal, a different test, and it should amount to something beyond seeding.

In Europe, soccer teams have the opportunity to win multiple trophies in any given year. Tournament play is celebrated but so too is sustained excellence over the course of the season.

Perhaps there could be further rewards for regular-season excellence: a bonus for players, guaranteed All-Star Games for the city, or something more creative tied to incentivizing success.
