Rangers - Signed Fukumori

Texas Rangers - Signed P Kazuo Fukumori to a 2-year contract.

It’s official:  Jon Daniels thinks that all Japanese people look alike - having a Japanese last name doesn’t make you Matsuzaka or Sasaki or Kuroda.  Kinda like when Steve Phillips got all excited over Tsuyoshi Shinjo for no reason in particular.  Fukomori’s had an up-and-down career and arm problems and there’s really no reason to sign him for a 2-year deal over signing any random AAA reliever to a minor-league deal.  ZiPS has him with a 5.10ish ERA - sorry, it just crashed on me.  Think Kevin Gryboski.

His last 3 years ERA in Japan were:

3.57
2.17!
4.75

5.10 seems a bit harsh....

Shinjo had some things going for him. He was an excellent fielder; he had flair and was fun to watch; and in '01, he and Desi Relaford seemed like the only guys on the team who could do anything right. The statline doesn't bowl you over, but in between the defense and timely hitting, on the rare occasion that anything ever went well for that team, Shinjo was usually in the middle of it.

Of course, he sucked after that. And I certainly agree that settling for the "next best" Japanese guy doesn't seem to often work (Igawa being Exhibit A.) Heck, I suspect that Kuroda is in that category himself, rather than being in the Dice-K/Sasaki category.

Don't think that's harsh. The best hitter he faced the last 3 years was Fukudome - he's good but the AL has a few guys who are better. He's escaping the small ballparks of Japan and going to, oh never mind.

The broadcasters' description of a Fukudome/Fukumori matchup must sound like the dialogue to a porn movie.

Check out Shinjo's salary for 2001. There's your reason.

Given that the Cubs and Rangers both play in the Cactus League, which only has a few teams, both teams are going to face each other several times in the spring.

That potential matchup has a high probability for some FCC fine action :P

I don't think bringing Shawn Estes to the team was doing things right.

With an OF of Benny Agbayani, Jay Payton and Timo Perez, you can start to appreciate the excitement Shinjo brought.

I see CHONE has him at 5.11, so I certainly in the minority on this one.
