Rockies - Acquired King

Colorado Rockies - Acquired P Ray King from the St. Louis Cardinals for 2B Aaron Miles and LF Larry Bigbie.

The Cardinals will have to add another reliever after this trade, but they get some depth at 2B and the outfield, so it’s a fair exchange.  St. Louis has 3 lefty relievers on the 40-man roster, Carmen Cali, Randy Flores, and Tyler Johnson and I can’t imagine LaRussa wanting to go into the season with all 3 on the team.

The Rockies planned on giving supersub Luis Gonzalez the 2B job full-time, so they won’t miss Miles and, being quite deep in organizational outfielders, traded one of the lesser of their surplus here.  King will be the Rockies’ top setup man.

I think Flores and Johnson can outperform King this year, but that doesn't make this a great trade or anything. Bigbie's not bad as a fourth outfielder, but he's not the solution, and Miles is an absolute mess. The bad news is that TLR's player usage patterns almost guarantee that Miles will probably get 200+ plate appearances, including some cringeworthy starts in left field.

Aaron Miles's parents don't miss him, let alone the Rockies.

Ray King playing half his games in Colorado.

I'll be amazed if he ends 2006 with his ERA only three digits.

Cardinals are acquiring an awful lot of bad players -- are we really going to start a lineup that includes Molina, Miles, Eckstein, Bigbie, and Taguchi?!?! If so, Rolen better be healthy, and he Prince Albert, and JEdmonds better all be in 2004 form.

I can't think of a better fate for that tub of goo, Burger King -- he is a jerk and deserved this banishment, if you ask me.
