Rockies - Signed Giles

Colorado Rockies - Signed 2B Marcus Giles to a minor-league contract.

In the good ol’ days of 10 years ago, declining free agents searching for one big payday didn’t dream of high-society bank heists, but getting a contract with the Rockies.  While Coors Field isn’t the hitters’ park that it once was, people like Ed Wade and Buzzie’s Other Idiot Son are still entrusted with checkbooks, and going to Denver is a helluva lot smarter than trying to revive your career in San Diego.  None of the competition at 2nd is all that frightening, so Giles could end up with a starting job if he plays well in the spring.

Dec 2008, Astros sign Giles to a 4 year, $30 million contract. Yippee!

As someone who had to watch Giles last year on a daily basis, I hope he wins the starting job in Colorado.

That ZiPS projection looks an awful lot like what Matsui did last year, except I doubt Giles will come anywhere close to Matsui defensively.

The Rockies have other options at second. The problem is, they don't really have any other good options.

The problem is, their other options either suck offensively or defensively because they're moving over from third or the outfield. While I like the idea of bringing in somebody to compete for a job in spring, this could be like last year when Dan O'Dowd gave a roster spot to Steve Finley for no particular reason.

You gonna do something appropriately mocking for BOIS' decision that the Mariners didn't have enough crappy futility infielders and, thus, Miguel Cairo!?

The weird thing about Giles is that it really seems like his power has absolutely collapsed.... like he caught a terminal case of Tyneritis or something.

Even in his wretched 2007 -- his walk rate was pretty much in line with career norms... which ain't Bondsian, but isn't bad for a MI with a bit of speed (and previously, a bit of pop).

He's still only 30. I know 2B seem to collapse faster than anyone else besides Catchers and SPs under Dusty Baker -- but is it possible that Giles actually does return to usefullness?

Personally - my money is on that optimistic projection and not just because of the home park.

Surely I'm not the first person to surmise that the Giles Bros. took turns injecting each other in the ass with steroids.... Both have fallen off a cliff offensively over the last couple years. Yes, SD has a big park, but Brian hit what, 9 homers last year??

OK, 13.

Yeah, there have been whispers about the Gileses. I'm exhausted enough from the actual evidence guys that I don't think I have the energy to even think about rumors!
