They're 60-50, which is an 88-win pace. This is 5 games better than your preseason 83-win estimate. I think the befuddlement comes from the shape of their path to today.

1. Start of the season they weren't pitching, but man were they hitting.
2. Pitching didn't come around, but the hitting worsened.
3. Pitching is finally coming into form, but the hitting got even worse.

You want some fun? Look at BB-ref's team splits.

Split         W  L W-L%   ERA
2016 Totals  60 50 .545  4.26
Last 28 days 11 12 .478  3.60
Last 14 days  5  8 .385  3.34
Last 7 days   2  4 .333  3.12

The closer you get to present day, their ERA drops... and so does their win %. And you don't know what to think?

Back in the early Epstein administration I felt like if they could go .500 on the road and take care of business at home they were just fine. They can't go .500 in an 11-game set, so 5-6 or 6-5 is as close as they can get. I look at this trip, see a 5-6 record, and I'm satisfied. I don't like the shape of how they got there, but the end result is around what should have happened (given an admittedly basic premise).

Ortiz needs something like a week off, IMO. Because it's his victory tour I'm doubtful that will happen.

I know what to think about this, it sucks. Looks like Swihart needs surgery. Boy I hope we didn't #### this all up.

Well, besides SON OF A #####!!! I mean, they get the pitching, now they don't hit, this is reminiscent of some of those early 80s teams. Very annoying but fun to watch.

It's the classic 3 scenarios...

They score 6+, they give up more and lose.
SP pitcher goes 7, give up 2 or less; pen coughs up lead and lose.
SP pitcher goes 6+, gives up 4 or less; team just doesn't score enough, loses 4-2 a lot.

I know this isn't happening all the time, it just seems that way.....

Funnily enough, I think if the team can find some form whereby everything is going just kind of going ok and make the playoffs, I think they could really do well once there.
