Report From The Fort

I would love to be able to give you guys some interesting stuff from my two visits this week to Fort Myers but I have little to report. On Tuesday it was just the big club working out, the minor leaguers were “in with the sheriff” according to one of the security guards which I assume is kind of like a start of semester meeting with the RD when you go live in a college dorm.  Then today I don’t know where the minor leaguers were but again, it was the big boys on the back fields.

The Major Leaguers were fun to watch though, especially this early in camp.  They were honestly doing the same drills I’ve had my ten year olds this month. Ground balls, throw to first, fly balls, call it three times (with someone blowing an air horn as a random distraction). Some base running stuff and then a bunch of batting practice.

The game today was more of the same. As noted in the rostering thread the lineup was not exactly the A team though it was nice to see Dalbec slam a two run homer in his first swing in anger of the spring. Jeter Downs showed good instincts reading a double steal well and hustling home to score a run. A young player who looked good was Ceddane Rafaela. The SoxProspects guys seem excited about him (defensive player of the year for the Sox’ system last year) and great speed which he showed on a couple of occasions racing around the bases.

Other Stuff

- no “Spring Training 2022” merch. Looks like they just forewent ordering it given the circumstances. On the top of that the concessionaires were having a terrible time processing credit cards (parking guy gave up and let me in free, wooo!).

- Alex Speier earned good guy points by being nice to my father on Wednesday. Then when I asked if the Sox were done he said “they are patient, I think they have another move.” I didn’t push the issue so I don’t know what he has in mind that they might do.

- A guy in a Derek Jeter jersey caught a ball thrown by the left fielder then went ass over teakettle over a couple rows of chairs. It was basically the 2004 catch if it was made by a fat white guy who was six beers in by the fifth inning.

That’s all I got for now. Heading home Saturday so nothing else happening.

Oh one thing I forgot, my father spoke to Alex Cora and asked about the major issue of the spring; Cora’s horrendous beard. Apparently Cora’s girlfriend likes it so he’s stuck with it.

The two signs of the onset of spring are Truck Day and the first Report From The Fort. Glad to have it.

Hey, in the other thread you mentioned Boston's need for a better utility infielder than Arauz. Is maybe David Hamilton the one? Two walks and some clean work at SS, including some competence on a slow grounder in the 8th, yesterday.

Yeah he looked alright at shortstop. I also forgot about Yolmer Sanchez who may or may not fit the bill. My understanding of Hamilton is that he is a slick fielder but not much with the bar.

Also Christian Arroyo was getting reps at third base on Tuesday morning.

“they are patient, I think they have another move.”

Next time you see Speier ask him for next week's winning lottery numbers.
