The Perfect Schedule - Games 61-70

On we go with our next set of ten games in the perfect schedule.  The Sox run their record to 70-0 with this set of ten games.  This set includes a mix of thrillers and routs so get the duck boats ready, get the duck boats ready!

Game 61 - 1995 - Tigers 11 at Sox 12 - Roger put the Sox in a 5-0 hole in the top of the 3rd but the Sox rallied for 8 in the bottom of the frame with Valentin, Naehring, O’Leary and Stairs driving in runs.  Up 11-6 in the ninth Ken Ryan and Stan Belinda couldn’t hold it but Lee Tinsley’s single scored pinch runner Juan Bell to win it.
Game 62 - 2011 - Sox 8 at Yankees 3 - The Sox polished off a sweep of the Bombers after a 3+ hour rain delay in the Bronx.  Down 2-0 in headed to the 7th the Sox sent eleven men to the plate and scored 7 runs with Mike Cameron’s double and Jed Lowrie’s triple among the big blows. Side note, game 62 is a good one, I had a lot of choices for this game.
Game 63 - 1986 - Sox 7 at Yankees 6 - I remember this one distinctly. I think school was just out so I got to stay up as the Sox built a 5-0 lead after one (Buckner and Evans homered) and 7-2 after 3 then held on for dear life.  Rice threw out Butch Wynegar at the plate in the ninth and the Yankees left 8 men on in the last three innings as Joe Sambito (who allowed three straight singles and a walk to start the ninth) earned the “save.”  Something called Alfonso Pulido pitched 6.2 innings of 2 hit shutout relief for New York.
Game 64 - 1988 - Sox 15 at Orioles 7 - Mike Smithson didn’t have it but the Sox got homers from their exciting young core of Mike Greenwell, Ellis Burks and the first career tater from first baseman of the future Pat Dodson.  Relief ace of the future Wes Gardner earned his first Red Sox victory with 4.1 innings of solid relief.
Game 65 - 2004 - Sox 11 at Rockies 0 - Shades of what would come in 2007 as David Ortiz had 5 RBI and Johnny Damon and Mark Bellhorn combined to score 5 runs as the Sox won a laugher.
Game 66 - 1995 - Sox 5 at Twins 4 - What would we do with Willie McGee? Let him lead off the ninth with a single and score the winning run on a hit by Tinsley.  Nice bit of symmetry as Stan Belinda went to 7-0 with the win and Eddie Guardado dropped to 0-7 with the loss.
Game 67 - 2011 - Sox 3 at Rays 0 - You don’t remember Josh Beckett’s tour de force one hitter (an infield hit) complete game over Tampa backed by a 3 run homer in the 7th by Youkilis?  That’s OK.  The best game score of Beckett’s Red Sox career had the misfortune of being an afterthought as Tim Thomas, Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand were the toast of Boston that night.
Game 68 - 1980 - Sox 5 at Yankees 4 - What a difference from the modern game.  Yankee starter Tommy John pitched a 10 inning complete game without a strikeout, the Sox used just two pitchers; Steve Renko (5.2) and Tom Burgmeier (4.1) and the Sox won it when Dave Stapleton doubled home Gary Allenson.
Game 69 (nice) - 2010 - Dodgers 6 at Sox 10 - Manny Ramirez made his return to Fenway while Felix Doubront made his MLB debut for the home side. Doobs (who I always loved) gave a reasonable accounting of himself to get the win and Scott Atchison, Dustin Richardson and Daniel Bard wrapped it up.
Game 70 - 1992 - Brewers 7 at Sox 8 - The Sox blew a 7-0 lead allowing 3 in the 8th and 4 in the 9th but won it in the 13th when Herm Winningham drove home Jack Clark with a single.
