The Return

On Saturday at about 7:10PM Nate Eovaldi will bring his left foot back, then forward raising his knee above his belt, then propel his body towards home plate whipping a baseball at a speed up to 100 MPH to Christian Vazquez or Kevin Plawecki.  37,731 people, give or take, will respond happily, or maybe sadly, or maybe mildly indifferently.  It is that last piece of information that is so important.  37,731 people.  Full…bleeping…capacity.  100% of all available seats and standing room areas filled to the brim with fans.  It will have been 608 days since Fenway Park brought in a full house.  The changes in the club and the world since that day are well-chronicled and not worth rehashing.

But back to Fenway we’ve gone.  I’ve shared before that the experience at the two games I’ve gone too this year has been different.  It has been much more festive reminiscent of those early Pedro Martinez starts minus the Dominican flags (though if Raffy keeps hitting bombs…).  As I’ve shared I coach youth baseball and it’s clear from the way the kids are behaving as restrictions are lifted that there is a joy and an optimism in society that is available.  With luck that will translate to Fenway Park, TD Garden (go Bruins!) and other sports and entertainment facilities around the country.  I love going to live baseball games.  There is something about the experience.  There is always someone to talk to, there is generally a shared element of joy, presumably you both like baseball.  As Douglas MacCarthur said the great freedom of going to a ballpark to boo the umpire is part of what makes this country great.

Everyone had their own view on all that has transpired in the last 15 or so months.  For me, the return to a full Fenway Park is the surest sign that, yes, life is returning to normal.  In 2007 my brother was working with a company that had an office in Australia.  He often chatted with one of the guys there and would refer to “the Sox” from time to time.  His Aussie friend, no baseball fan, wished him well one night saying “go the Sox!”  To this day my bro and I will text that phrase to each other as we ready for a big game.  With the Sox just half a game out of first what else is there to say but Go The Sox!

Not this weekend unfortunately. Little league commitments. Might be able to sneak away on Sunday but that would mean we lost Sunday morning so it's a catch 22.
