Or not. Barnes and the others are apparently back in camp today; asymptomatic and passing tests so that's good news.

Well, I hate to say it....but this is not a good defensive team. Martin Perez might be in for a rough year.

According to SoxProspects Cordero has been officially activated and Chavis sent to Worcester. Colten Brewer also optioned so Philips Valdez is on the roster. I'm a bit perplexed though since I already had Cordero on my roster so the pitchers;

Barnes and Andriese in; Brewer and presumably McCarthy out. Simple enough.

But since I had Cordero on the roster who takes Chavis' roster spot? From what I've been reading it might be Houck as they may be lining him up to take EdRod's turn in the rotation. Man, 14 pitchers, 12 position players. Ugh.

MLB is showing 15 pitchers, 12 position players on their active roster.

Brasier, Andriese, Barnes, E Rod

no Brewer, no McCarthy, no Chavis

Yeah that's right. Brasier is going on the IL when the season starts and assuming Rodriguez does also then Houck will be taking his spot.

If Cordero can’t go Yairo Munoz would seemingly be the guy. I wouldn’t bet on it but given his strong spring and the May start for minor league baseball I think Jarren Duran getting out there for a few games has to be considered possible. But I’d expect it to be Munoz.

Wouldn't Marcus Wilson be the guy to get called up? He's already on the 40-man, whereas adding Munoz means someone else has got to go.

That makes sense but I just don't hear a peep about Wilson anywhere. Munoz is playing more than him (and raking) and obviously was adequate last year during his call up. You raise a good point though. Going through the 40 man roster there is no obvious "that guy is just a holding pattern" with the possible exception of Wilson himself so maybe that's the route they would go.

I think it's a bit moot at this point with the Sox going 14 pitchers/12 hitters instead of 13/13 as I laid out. Given the current set up it's pretty clear that Chavis would be the first call if Cordero can't go though that also no longer seems relevant.

Jarren Duran wraps up his spring with a double, scores on a line drive single to right, then in his final at bat cranks a solo homer to right.

Sox going 14 pitchers/12 hitters . . .
I can remember when it was said that the only reason you’d go with 11pitchers is that you didn’t have 10 of MLB quality, although that comment may have been about playoff rosters. Still, with all the early season off days, you wonder why teams can’t get by with 12 pitchers for a bit, and add a superior defensive player or platoon bat. The 3-batter rule should also disfavor expanded bullpens, although that seems like a minority view so far.

It's definitely the evolution of the game I like the least. I'd love to see a 10 or I guess 11 man staff. 14 guys on the staff is insane and I suspect it is probably the norm (or close to it).

Good Lord....

MLB: Let's add another roster spot.
Baseball fans: Yay! More bench variety!
Baseball teams: Yay! Ten-man bullpens!

I really hate what contemporary Major League Baseball has become.

When they first went to this they limited to 13 pitchers, but I guess that's out the window. Maybe for this year with everyone so concerned about year over year innings increases allowing 14 makes sense, but I hope they cut it back to what they originally instituted.

yeah what the hell is this? I thought the whole idea with 26 man rosters was to make it 13 positional and 13 pitchers. Why the hell have we gone through this whole thing of defining who is a pitcher if there are no restrictions on the roster now?

On the Sox broadcast today they said the requirement to identify pitchers is not happening this year. Anyone can pitch at any time.

Sox signed Hector Rondon.

Just realized that the 2021 Red Sox have regulars wearing #0 and #99, and that range is a record that won't be broken for a while.
